Then again, maybe not, since they don’t have an analog line-in for my turntable.
To be clear, the USB-C input is analogue (if it’s anything like Theatre, new Beosound 2 and A9). It just needs a 3.5mm aux-in to USB-C adapter, but it’s a “dumb” “passthrough” adapter, just a matter of wiring the wires to the new connector form factor (USB-C). It’s not like Beosound A1 or Explore, which support/require a source outputting USB-C digital audio.
If it’s like the new A5, the line-in function is not working. My dealer told me it was when I bought it, and I used a USB-C adapter, but this function was removed from B&O before release.
So I won’t bet on that it has a Line-in..
The listed pair prizes I see are 5000 € (with the regular cloth cover) and 6000 € (with the lamellas) including the table stand. MM
I saw that, but come on! It’s a lot of money!
My dealer in Norway was speaking and waiting that the start price in will be about 40 000 NOK, but that rocket it up to nearly 55 ooo NOK.
I have owned BO products for many years now, but now I am afraid they may be opening doors to other companies for me personally now..
It looks really good! And I love it, …BUT, the price! With oak the pricing in Norway is over 70 500 NOK ! Over 6000 Euro!
I don’t know, but I am afraid they are getting way to expensive for “normal” working class people..
Hi Normann, I’m looking to get Hi-Res Audio (higher than 48kHz) using the BST. I don’t want to use 2 channel on the beolab 18’s as they are setup as rear speakers. Thus the only option is to use the BST. The AppleTV is limited to 48kHz so running Roon on it is nice but limited in quality. Roon uses AirPlay to stream so that further reduces the quality of what may likely be a 192kHz file. If I were able to connect a high-res network streamer then I was hoping to be able to send a higher-res audio file than otherwise possible using AppleTV or using Deezer. My speakers start and shut-down with the BST.
I notice that the 18’s has a limit on 24 bit/48 kHz .. for your information ..
Not sure exactly what’s your priority here is. To use Roon in your Theatre/18s/19 setup? Or to use hi-res music? You can obviously use Roon in that setup, as the Apple TV is Roon Ready, so will use Roon’s RAAT protocol to stream to. I dont do that with my Apple TV in my living room myself, but I have a different setup with a 3rd party streamer/DAC direct to my front L/R speakers. I dont really have anything to add re hi-res music to my previous posts I’m afraid. Personally I’d only want to listen to music (2.0) through front left / rights – other combinations of speakers (including the Theatre) doesn’t do it for me.
The main thought with this is to play hires on my 18+19.. The BT should just be the “main controller” for my setup.. That was my idea.. But maybe it’s better to do t your way, just connect directly to the 18.. Does your speakers start up and shut down when you start/stop playing music?
Maybe I am just thinking a littlebit wrong here..
You could get a network streamer/DAC that is Roon ready and use its analogue output to connect direct to your BL18s. I do that with my BL50s, though they have higher capabilities than the 18s. Again, I wouldn’t get over exercised about hi-res on speakers like the 18s. And also, many B&O customers (some of whom have 18s) use Deezer Hifi, which is not the lower bitrate of Spotify, but full CD quality streams. That’s generally how a lot of customers use their stuff.
Thank you for explaining.
I did see that the 18’s has limited capabilities for high res music files..The 28’s also looks like the same, unfortunately..
Of course the quality of the recordings has a lot to say, but I would love to take a step up to benefit the speakers potensial.. And it look like the first step is the 50’s.. It’s a huge step money wise.. 🙁
Could It be possible to connect a Bluesound Node and use the hdmi output on that and connect to the Theater?
Nope, sorry. Node’s HDMI connector is for input only, from the eARC out of a TV.
Or an iFi Streamer and analog out and in on the usb-c using a dongle?
Again, I don’t see the point of stretching for a hi-res data stream, and then doing a conversion to analog in the source device, only to resample it back to digital at the input of the Theatre (later converting it back to analog again to drive the speakers). The only other possibility I can imagine is if there are applications in the LG panel, or the AppleTV, for your hi-res music service, which can output to the eARC — that supports up to 24-bit 192-kHz. (Don’t forget to read the HDMI cable markings, because it needs 48 Gbps transmission bandwidth to send that.) Also bear in mind, if you use any of the self-calibration features of the Theatre or the TrueImage speaker steering, it’s going to muck around with your pristine digital data anyway!
Okay, so to ask in an other way.. How is it possible to play Hi-Res audio on B&O speakers?
My set up in the living room to day is beoplay 18, 19 and a Moment. I am thinking to buy a Theater and a LG G3, but I also want my music to sound as good as possible.. So what do people do?
I think it’s a waste of money – to pay many thousands of $$ on equipment/speakers and only play low res files using Spotify..?!
That extra D-to-A plus A-to-D resampling round-trip seems anathema, in the high-res world. Might one solution be acquiring an “old” Oppo UDP-205 for its jitter-eliminating secondary HDMI Audio-only port, and using it as the streamer, thus preserving the signal digitally, into one of the Theatre’s HDMI inputs? I don’t remember the issues vs. Roon-ready after all this time, but I thought this allowed hi-res all the way until the final renderer’s (Theatre’s) D-to-A?
Could It be possible to connect a Bluesound Node and use the hdmi output on that and connect to the Theater? As the Bluesound is Roon Ready..
Or an Ifi Streamer and analog out and in on the usb-c using a dongle?
I am considering buying a Theater these days, but the connection for a Roon Ready device is important for me..
OK, thanks. I was hoping that I could use a better DAC that’s in my pc.. That’s why I bought a Audioquest Dragonfly so I could use that instead my pc as an Roon endpoint. (when listening with headphones f.e) Really hope that BO could be a Roon Ready product soon.. I then have to reconsider what I should do with the A5, sadly as it really is a good speaker with nice punch.
Just to be clear, even without using the Dragonfly, you still wouldn’t be using the DAC of the computer or the DAC of the iPhone. Putting the Dragonfly in the middle (computer/iPhone -> Dragonfly DAC -> Beosound A5) would be completely useless and actually a bad practice, as you’d run the sound through two DACs. The Dragonfly and the internal DAC of the A5. It’s good practice to do the digital-to-analogue conversion (i.e. what’s done by the DAC) as few times as possible (ideally, just one), so the perfect and most “high quality” way to listen to music on the A5 would be to use only its internal DAC. How do you ensure you’re only using the speaker’s own DAC? By ensuring that everything you feed into the speaker is pure digital and has never been converted to analogue. And how do you do that? Just by connecting the speaker to the source in the most direct way possible, that is by using digital audio over USB-C. An external DAC such as the Dragonfly makes sense only if what comes after it is a purely analogue audio device (i.e. passive wired headphones, or an analogue amplifier connected to some speakers – or to headphones). Placing a digital audio device at the output end of another DAC? Very very very bad choice ? So, just use a Lighting to USB-C cable (I think a normal Lightning to USB-C wouldn’t work as Apple made them only capable of signaling the iPhone to a host device, while in this case the iPhone itself would be the host device, so you either need a Lighting to USB-A camera connection kit and then a USB-A to USB-C cable connected from the camera connection kit to the USB-C input of the speaker, OR a Lightning to USB-C cable specifically made for this purpose – as I think as I mentioned earlier a standard one wouldn’t work). If you want to use a computer instead, just use a standard USB-A/USB-C to USB-C cable and that’s it. No need to worry about the Dragonfly, for the best sound out of a Beosound speaker you won’t use it. Hope it’s clearer now ? Edit: for iPhone, a Lightning to USB-C OTG cable should work (bear in mind they’re not “Made for iPhone” certified as Apple really wants to sell you the camera connection kit), such as FiiO LT-LT1 or LT-LT3 (different length).
Hi. Thanks for clarifying this.. I’m not that into the use of dac’s or wiring world (as I maybe should have ).
One thing that’s important for me when I buy a BO product is to let it potential out, and get the best out of the product.
So thanks for clarifying for me about the connectivity.
As the speakers it self, I must say I am really impressed the way it sounds.. It’s really clear and the bass goes deep for it size.
So after using it for the weekend, using Roon and Google cast, I am going to stay with it.. (Still hope that BO would be a Roon Ready product)
And,.. my wife love’s it already.. You all know happy wife, happy life 🙂
Why not just airplay from your Roon device to the A5? MM
Because of the sound quality.. I have a lot of hi res files, and Airplay is restricted to only 16/44.
Then it’s way better to use chrome cast that can stream up to 24/96, and use the speakers quality.
OK, thanks.

Does this include all products on the Mozart platform?
I thought I could connect a Dragonfly to my iPhone and use a connection to the A5, but as you say.. That will not work?
Do you then have a suggestion on how I can play Roon on a Bluesound Node on a Theater?
Doesn’t that work either?
Thank you for your answers 🙂
Thanks Steve.
But where can I adjust this in the app? I can’t find it anywhere …
I bought me a A5 yesterday. Does anybody know how I can adjust the line in sensibility?
In previous products I could do this in the BO app under sound settings, but it looks like it’s not possible on this product..
