      Hi @beobuddy,

Speaker type is 6881 with SW 2.6 (not sure which revision of speakers this is mk1, mk2 or mk3).

Yes, speaker stop responding to remote controller commands once it gets warm (after 1..3 hours of normal operation – no loud audio there).

I can certainly check if micro is covered with something but how do you draw any conclusions out of it?

How would you go about fixing something like that? Do you offer service to fix it?

      Thanks,
      Henryk

        Hi @marexy

        Thanks for note.

How do you start such repair? Are you looking for voltage levels based on block diagram or something? Any guidance where to start and what to pay attention to when doing so?

        Thanks,
        Henryk

          Hi @marexy

Looking thru forums for Beolab 5 success stories I came across you.

Did you manage to fix yours Beolab 5? What I wrote above still stands. At this point I basically completely powered down one of my Beolab 5. It is not completely dead but it feels like it is on its way out.

Do you have any advises where to start repair of those speakers? Which components are mostly faulty? What to pay attention to? What to check (inside) using scope, etc?

I guess there is no way to get schematic or layout or BOM for those speakers therefore any advice that could be shared here how to proceed with potential work to fix them would be very much appreciated.

          Thanks,
          Henryk

            Hi,

            Thanks for all your advice’s.

I can confirm that replacing belt fixes the issue with clamper not opening up properly.

Replacement belt can be procured from here: https://www.beoparts-shop.com/product/belt-for-beocenter-2-motorized-doors/

Instruction how do disassembly it can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ro6QUI212gk If unit didn’t have some challenged past life opening up is actually quite simple. To replace belt someone will have to:

            1. remove left and right wings (ideally disconnect cable to right wing as well),
            2. remove display (cables can stay as they are, no need to disconnect them),
            3. remove right wing gearbox cover. Belt is located under this cover.

Once there, replacing belt is simple. Then everything needs to be put together in reverse order.

If it helps someone to diagnose a problem in the future, I noticed that with incorrect belt there is an audible sound produced by wing motor once it reaches max wing openings. Basically motor pulley slides on loose belt for ~1 Second before some timer kicks in to stop the motor from operation. Once new belt is installed, there is no longer belt sliding and everything works just fine.

            Good luck.

              Hi,

I think I found solution to it (I have to test it). Looks like issue is with belt that moves wings:

              https://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/p/4088/211948.aspx

              https://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/t/5744.aspx

Here are some information about the belt itself: https://forum.beoworld.org/forums/topic/beocenter-2-cd-tray-belt/

It can be procured from here: https://www.beoparts-shop.com/product/belt-for-beocenter-2-motorized-doors/

I’ll do that and hopefully this will solve the problem here.

              Thanks,
              Henryk

                Hi,

I have exactly the same problem. Did anyone there ever manage to figure out what is an issue here?

                Thanks,

                  Hi @beobuddy,

One more observation from my side. If speaker that exhibits unstable behaviour is cold (in power down state) and I power up whole audio system it works as expected. There are no issues with reacting for commands from Beosound.

Issues starts to appear when speaker runs for number of hours and I guess its guts to higher temperature.

Is there a chance that some sort of thermal paste that should be present between components and their heatsinks is gone after 15+ years and this causes some issues?

                  Any guidance is highly appreciated.

                  Thanks for your time,
                  Henryk

                    Hi @beobuddy,

My name is Henryk. I 100% agree with your statement: Beolab 5 sound amazing and have a unique appearance. To the point that recently I acquired pair of them (vintage 2007). They indeed deliver.

One of those speakers is perfectly fine.

The other one, I think, starts to exhibit issues that will cause repair effort in near future. Here is what I noticed so far

                    1. It takes considerably longer time for it to finish autocalibration procedure (compare to working specimen)
                    2. It stops reacting to commands from Beosound 9000 (It will react to wake up command but once operational the only way to power it down would be thru power cycle)
                    3. It might be just my impression but it could be getting warmer compared to working specimen (judging by heatsink temperature at the back)
                    4. If it gets warm if won’t start again even after power cycle. It needs to be left powered down to cool down for half an hour or so, and then it will start again.

This is what I noticed so far. It feels like there is an issue with its power supply that starts to affect stability of the system but I might be completely wrong. Here is where I hope you can help me.

If you could guide me what could be done next to service/fix this speaker that would be very much appreciated. I only have access to what is widely available on the internet which is service manual.

Since schematic, PCB files or BOM are not available, I would work completely blind here which might not be a good idea. In the past I did this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFGvZFi11Zc therefore I should be able to work on this system with some guidance from someone who knows 🙂

If possible, please share your suggestions how we can proceed here.

                    Thanks for your time,
                    Henryk

                      Hi Johan,

Much appreciate your note here. I wasn’t aware of it.

I’ll get in touch with Beobuddy next to see if he can help me.

                      Thanks again,

Thanks for note Marexy, appreciate it.

Problems you mention (PA board, SW board, PSU board). Are they down to aluminum caps drying out? Something to do with this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague ?

Or there are components that overheat? Or something else?

With lack of detailed schematic and PCB/BOM information fixing those systems might indeed be tricky.

                        Thanks,
                        Henryk

                          Hi Everyone,

Few small comments from me whatever they worth it.

                          Clear goal

                          • In my opinion, true value of Beoworld is in forum where people help each other and in manual/schematics repository. I personally think that both should be preserved somehow and they should be prioritized for that to happen.
                          • Access to forum needs to stay free of charge otherwise people might not want to engage on it at all.
                          • There is probably room for improvement with the way how information about wealth of knowledge that is available in manual/schematic is advertised.

                          Prize draw

                          • I personally think that possibility to win BeoGram that use to belong to Roger Moore was something truly special. I didn’t win it but this was something really great.
                          • if possible, decrease to 2 (summer and Christmas). If not possible, suspend it altogether.
                          • maybe decrease number of prizes that could be won?
                          • ask people on a forum to donate their stuff they don’t need/use anymore, to be used as possible prizes to win. Surely there are people there who own more than they need and would not mind share joy with others. Those people, if they wish could be named during prize draw if this helps.

                          Money

                          • Instead of increasing members fee, add options that are cheaper. If someone needs to spend 1 or 5$/E they might not think much about it. Add cheaper option to gain access to limited number of manuals downloads. For example: 2 downloads for 1$ and 10 downloads for 5$?
                          • do not increase membership fee but highlight possibility of donating more money if someone wish to do so
                          • try to figure out a way to connect with distributors, especially one that sell 2nd hand B&O stuff. It might be win-win situation where they can sell stuff that needs some TLC and at the same time point their customer towards Beoworld for help.
                          • I don’t know how but maybe there is a way to monetize know-how that is available in forum members heads. Maybe after receiving good and useful response to question posted on forum, person who asked question is poked by some automated system to contribute 1$ towards Beoworld website? Might be annoying buy maybe it will generate some money.

                          Awareness

                          • when I type in google “B&O help” I can only see links to official B&O site. No mention about Beoworld. It might be possible to influence positioning on Google. Maybe someone with such knowledge could help here?
                          • when I type in google “B&O manuals” Beoworld is at the bottom of first page (which is OK) but there is also a website https://beomanuals.com/ with what looks like all B&O manuals and they are for free. This kinda kills my idea about charging for them.
                          • maybe start some sort of campaign on Beoworld forum asking members to tell their friends about its existence? Concept of social network is certainly there. If there is a free way to utilize it, why not.

                          Longevity

                          • move forum from home server to some sort of Google, Amazon or Microsoft online service. This should decrease amount of effort that is needed to keep forum alive and stable. Explain the audience cost of it and clarify where contributions to Beoworld membership are used.

No great solutions here. Just some thoughts.
