It all depends on how the BV11 is setup. Look in the setup for the option to select the correct type of Beo4.
I too thought that, but found this in a BV11-40 manual:
Note that your Beo4 remote control

You cannot use a Beo4 remote control
without navigation button.
So perhaps some SW versions did not have the facility to chose remotes with/without navi button.
That seems peculiar………. how about the BR1: no navi button.
And the 46 and 55, for sure had the option to select the remote, when I had these Beovisions.
I think he should try to set the BV11 to non-navi button and the Beo4 to mode 1 (if these older Beo4 do have these settings) and try the Beo4 OR set the BV11 to Beoremote One and try the Beo4.
But keep the BV11 option to 1 or 2 (and thus the Beo4 settings in the BV11, if asked, also).
Note: does he have a Beovision 11 for sure?? Or does he have a Beovision 14??
