    Thanks Sandyb,

I also googled but problems were about the optical connexion, which is limited to 96 kHz in the BL50.

THAT said, I definitely made the comment about personal preference. Just because something is measurably โ€œbetterโ€ (e.g. more like the original โ€“ whatever that is/was) doesnโ€™t necessarily mean that youโ€™ll like it more. Better for you is not necessarily better for anyone else.

I admit that personal taste is a prominent element in the perception, which is source to endless debates.

My concern is to eliminate any digital “filter” bewteen NAS and BL50s, in order to have them in charge of the restitution of the digital signal. Is it impossible?

    To Geoff:

I have a problem with my 50s, as they seem to be unable to play 192 kHz files from the coaxial input.

I noticed in the technical guide that specification, for that input, is stated “up to 192 kHz”, vs “up to and including 192 kHz” for USB Audio.

Should I understand that coaxial input does not support 192 kHz files?

Here is an extract of BL50 technical guide (available on the B&O website):

Appendix 1: Recommendations for Critical Listening

    14.1 Loudspeaker Configuration

The Beolab 50 provides you with an
    extremely wide range of parameters
that can be used to adjust the timbral
    and spatial presentation of your
    recordings for various listening rooms,
    loudspeaker placements and listening
positions. However, it is always best to
start with an optimal configuration in
    your listening room.

    First consider the relationship between
    the loudspeakers and the listening
    position itself. The two loudspeakers
and the listening position should be the
three corners of an equilateral triangle.

This means that the distance from
    each loudspeaker to the listening
position should be the same as the
    distance between each loudspeaker.
This also means that the loudspeakers
will be 30โ—ฆ away from the front, centre
location, directly in front of the
    listening position.

Figure 14.1: The centre of the sound
beam in the vertical plane is level with
the top edge of the acoustic lens when
raised (at a height of 108.7 cm from the
    floor).

    Secondly, the two loudspeakers should
be โ€œtoed-inโ€ by 30โ—ฆ. This means that
they should be slightly rotated so that
they are both facing the listening
position. This is shown in Figure 14.2.

    Figure 14.2: A โ€œperfectโ€ loudspeaker
    configuration with Beolab 50โ€™s. Both
loudspeakers are aimed at the listening
position. The distance from the listening position to each loudspeaker is the
same as the distance between the two
    loudspeakers.

If possible, the height of the listening
chair should be set so that the
listenerโ€™s ears are level with the centre
of the vertical beam, shown in Figure
    14.1.

    The next consideration is symmetry
within your listening room. It is
    commonly recognised that the best
stereo imaging will be achieved if the
    listening configuration (the triangle
formed with the listener and the two
    loudspeakers) is placed in leftโ€“right
centre of the room. Therefore, the side
walls will both be the same distance
from the listening position, and the
    loudspeakers will have the same
distance to its adjacent walls. This is to
say that the distance from the left
loudspeaker to the left wall is the same
as the distance between the right
loudspeaker and the right wall. The
distance to the front wall (behind the
loudspeakers) should be the same for
    both loudspeakers, but certainly does
not have to be the same as the
    distance to the side walls.
Figure 14.3: An optimal placement for
the loudspeakers with respect to adjacent walls. Note that the distance between each loudspeaker and its closest side wall are identical, and that the
distances from the loudspeakers to the
    front wall are also matched.
    Figure 14.4: An less-optimal placement
for the loudspeakers with respect to adjacent walls. Note that the distances
from the loudspeakers to the front wall
are matched , however, the distance between each loudspeaker and its closest
    side wall are not identical.
Figure 14.5: Another example of a lessoptimal placement for the loudspeakers with respect to adjacent walls. The
distances from the loudspeakers to the
front wall are matched, however, the
right loudspeaker and lacks a side wall
    nearby.

    It’s 5 meters long.

1st test made a cable supplied with Beolab 5s, connected to the SP/DIF out of a Beocenter 2, as I had no problem with this cable with this configuration.

So I suspected the cable and bought a brand new one, with the same lack of result.

    Thanks Mr 10%

Yes, everything is configured as you stated. Wiim is configured to a maximum rate of 192 kHz on Coaxial out.

I do not use Optical for this test, as this connector is limited to 96 kHz on the speakers.

With 96 kHz file, the coaxial input works normally. With a 192 kHz file, no sound.

The BL50s switch-on on both files.

I checked with a brand new cable, same result.

    Kind regards,

    Yann.

    Bits are bits!

MM, that’s exactly what I think.

But so many people are stating that Core is easily blown away by such or such 3rd streamer that I would like to understand what happens to these poor 0s and 1s ๐Ÿ™‚

    Sandyb,

I do not plan to replace my Core for the reasons explained in my previous post.

But I want to get the best of my 50s.

So, if the Core has no impact on the digital flow send to the 50s, I’m happy with it.

But if there is an impact, I may think to an hybrid system as yours.

I tried Roon some time ago because it hosts Qobuz but did not keep it, as on long listening session the “more of the same” automatic playlist following an album was a bit boring.

    Thanks MM,

I agree with you for the benefits of the core in a extensive setup as mine (several rooms and products of all generations), becauseย any product can reach the others in terms of content and control.

Especially with a NL/ML converter in the game.

In fact, I do not plan to remove it.

I don’t use Tidal, but Qobuz which is unfortunately not natively integrated in the app, as it has been done for Deezer.

I can understand that a streamer can have an impact of the sound for analog to digital conversion. But this is not my concern as all my music is stored as digital files and the Core is used as a hub for streaming and NAS access.

In a nutshell, the question is to know if the Core is perfectly transparent (or not) in a totally digital signal path.

You are right, the Core replaced a few years ago a Moment used for playing music stored in the NAS and Net Radios to the rest of my setup (I was not confident in the Moment’s lifespan although it was a nice product).

I appreciate its integration in the B&O ecosystem (until the 5.4 version of the app).

    To Mr Andersen,

As an addition to MM’s answer, here is the list of sources available in one of my products.

My setup includes Theatre and Core, NL/ML Converter and Beocenter 2..

By the way, it would be great if the source list could be manually ordered.

    Kind regards,

    Yann.

    Hi Sandyb,

I’m also concerned if the solution they are working on is just a “gain” setting.

I noticed that the sound level changes tremendioulsy from one TV channel to another, so a setting based on the source will not help.

In my opinion, changing volume when changing the source is less annoying than changing it when changing from one channel to another.

So the solution which seem sto be in the pipeline is not adressing the source of the problem. It’s just a a bandage on a wooden leg.

BTW, how did you roll back to the previous version of firmware?

    Kind regards,

    Yann.

    Hello Beoworlders,

    Done!

The new setup is installed. I’m really pleased with the Theatre/50 combo.

My dealer ordered for the Theatre the same black as the speaker’s one.

I really appreciate the 50s, they are more directional than the 5s and the stereo image is more accurate.

    Connexions are as this:

    Theatre –> BL: Powerlink

    Core –> BL: Optical

    BS2 –> BL: SP/DIF (for CD only)

No other connexion between BS2 and Core (which have been placed in the master speaker) or BL since the NL/ML converter distributes the ML sources.

The only problem is volume control when listening to the core, as:

    • It is only possible in the app,
    • I have to leave the Core’s page and turn the the BL’s one to set volume.

    Kind regards,

    Yann.

    MM,

I agree with you on the missing linked sources.

In the previous versions, these sources were also missing in the Theatre but were available in the Core’s sources list.

For the unused source, we need at least a way to reorganize the list in order to place them at the end.
