Could you please confirm the current sw version is 2.5.55678(170713653) ?
Is it fair to assume that Beosound Essence Mk2 software is no longer updated? That said, if I were to obtain a unit with older software, is it still updatable?
I ask because of the sad case of the ML/NL converter: we have a final version, but if you failed to update it when it was still updatable… you are out of luck forever.
Thanks in advance,
31 July 2024 at 08:42 #57796My Essences are at…
…and that is the latest it has gotten with Autoupdate set to on.
I do not remember when it was done.
P.S.
A bit of a mystery, though, is that Beotool shows something different.
When searching in the app, it says ‘up to date’ 😏
No big deal for me – my Essences do what I expect from them respectively need.

31 July 2024 at 14:28 #57798Release notes here: https://update.bang-olufsen.com/products/58ba6c9e15524870a403957cdfbee6ab
Mine auto-updated to 2.5.556 about three weeks go, so it would appear that SW is still being updated. An older product should update without problem, as long as it’s a Mk2.
(But I still can’t get IR control to work – annoyingly!)

Did you ever get any answer from B&O support regarding that issue?

They did answer but I didn’t get it to work – sorry I should have updated that other thread. They advised me to update the software (which I already had) and asked me to confirm the connections – I sent a copy of the NL/ML eye wiring diagram from the ML handbook and they didn’t say it was wrong. I also asked them to confirm when to set A,OPT 1 – once they understood the question they told me that it should be done when the Essence is in ‘Network Standby’ – again, I had already tried this.
So I have given up! If there are new SW updates I will check again. Otherwise, it would be useful to know if anyone has got it to work recently, either with the newer JOIN ML IR eye or the older TIMER version that I am trying.
31 July 2024 at 18:56 #57819Thank you all! So, the sw is still updateable, and furthermore, an update was issued as recently as a few weeks ago! Most excellent news.
Guy —If I get one of these, my plan is to test it with my “JOIN”-type eye that works perfectly with my ML/NL converter, in order to decide whether to buy one for the Beosound Essence. I’ll post my results if and when it happens.
31 July 2024 at 19:59 #57821Looking into it more closely, it is funny……my other Essences are up to date and the one, from which I posted the screenshot, is not.
They are all set to auto update.
So why do they have different versions?
However – as I wrote – they all do what I need from them – so there can’t be much difference or improvement there.
P.S. No experience here with ir eye – all my current stuff is NL-based and BROne/bluetooth controlled.

Many thanks indeed – I look forward to hearing whether it works!

I checked back through my emails because I remember B&O tech support telling me about a new SW update in one of their emails about IR control. Their email was dated 3 July, and said that version 2.6.56017 had just been released. I think that my Essence updated to this even later version, and will check later today.
EDIT: Here’s confirmation:
So I think that software release link that I sent earlier (here) actually shows earlier releases, rather than the latest one – the same data as the ‘earlier releases’ option on the app. It’s a shame that we can’t then see the release notes for the latest release.
(As and aside, you can see a full list of B&O SW releases (not just Essence) here: https://update.bang-olufsen.com/products)

So you have got a later version for your Essence, than I have on mine (and one of those is even far behind, although it says ‘updated’).
It is ‘weird’……if I may say it with a modern buzzword 🤣

I have 1 used for the bathroom with the newer ir (Join) receiver in the wall.
I remember that I had to change the option setting. But whether it was 1,2 or 4. Just try. The “join”button always works instantly, but responding to the remote (Beo4 in plastic) needed the option instruction. But I can’t remember as it (still) works for the past 5-6 yrs.
7 August 2024 at 21:03 #58093IR Eye (JOIN button, RJ-45 [8P8C/ethernet connector]) accepts IR commands on Beosound Essence Mk2 under software 2.5.55678.170713653. The IR Eye was configured to A.OPT 2 using a Beo4 while the Essence was on standby.
Before configuring A.OPT2, the Essence had been factory reset and subsequently set to my home’s environment, i.e., network, Deezer password, etc. Upon plugging in the IR Eye, its buttons activated their respective functions, but it responded to no IR commands.
The IR Eye was unplugged from a working ML/NL Converter. Inconsistency: on the NL/ML, the IR Eye plugs into the slot marked IR IN – RS232, whereas on the Essence it plugs into the slot marked IR-IN.
I was unable to find nor download any newer version sw for Essence, neither using the “modern” B&O app’s “product settings” nor digging into the “configure” menu on the B&O app which takes you to the product’s original web server page and duplicates and expands the B&O app functionality.
8 August 2024 at 08:46 #58095Thanks @Beobuddy, and thanks also to @XavierItzmann for those IR tests. It’s good to know that it is possible to get IR control working, although it’s strange that I seem to have been able to get a later SW version. (But mine was previously at 2.5.556 and IR didn’t work then either). I have tried all those combinations of factory reset, different option settings etc.
I will wait for the next SW update, and if that doesn’t cure my fault I think I will open it up and check a few components as suggested by @madskp in the other thread here.
1 October 2024 at 18:29 #59659I set up my Essence Mk2 for the first time for a few weeks today, and noticed that another software update was available – namely 2.6.56379.258833281
Details are shown here (and unusually for the site it shows the date of release as 30 Sep 24): https://update.bang-olufsen.com/products/58ba6c9e15524870a403957cdfbee6ab#version-2.6.56379.258833281
When I have time I will see if the update makes any difference to my IR reception problems.
