      What’s this?

      https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283785187097

And more importantly, do I need one? ?

        Hi Guy,

One of the pictures shows part Nr 1638, with is Beolink Active.

This item was intended to create a link room (with addiditon of a pair of active speakers).

An IR eye is necessary for remote control.

        More pictures there https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/o-bang-olufsen-type-1638-beolink-250461712

I do not know what the 2 other pictures refer to.

        Kind regards,

        Yann.

Ha ha ? That’s why I have so many boxes of B&O in my spare room!!

Could it be a low pass filter, extracting the Subwoofer frequencies from the rest, like the Powerlink outs on Beolab 2 or 11?

Yes I saw that on the casing, but I think the internals and end plates are bespoke for another function – or the modifier has done an excellent job of disguising the ML socket etc! The usual ‘raised’ socket labels and ‘BANG & OLUFSEN’ logo are also missing, and I have never seen such white lettering.

We’ll never know. Strange that the Subwoofer socket is an input rather than output? Perhaps it’s a dealer device like that speaker switch that has been discussed in the forum before.

Yes, the mystery is what could this thing be for? What would be the use of a Woofer IN with two Front OUT? And if this would be some sort switch, how would it be controlled: no IR in, nothing appart INs/OUTs and Power. Should it be reversed I would understand it was what SIA43 said, but this ?

My first thought was similar to Sia43’s suggestion. Of course the labeling doesn’t make sense, unless, it is trying to indicate which port on the OTHER equipment to hook it up to. For example, SUBWOOFER IN means to hook it up to the input port of the subwoofer.

Otherwise, maybe it is a remixer for someone that has a high-passed center channel and low-passed subwoofer channel and wants to run left and right full range speakers?

I also noticed the lack of an IR connection. Could it be on the side of the box and not pictured?

I wouldn’t say it’s a scam but at least its a misleading sale. Top and side views are not the same item: On the top view it’s a C7 power plug and there is only one “screw ear”, on the side views it’s a 12v jack and both “screw ear” are there. Definitely not a 1638 BL Active.

Good catch on the power cord. Maybe there is a clue in the seller’s name (i.e. ishams*123)? 😉

However, looking at the rest of the B&O stuff that he has for sale, it is probably a legitimate oversight in the pictures. Why scam people on a $50 item when you are selling a bunch of more expensive stuff?

I’d missed that – well spotted!

Great inputs – let’s find some other strange eBay B&O listings about which to ponder …

Here’s one I actually bought. I now know what it is, but any guesses?

                              A Beolab 2500 -> Beolab 90 converter?        😀

Close! The hole (and the two the other side) are for co-ax (aerial) cables.

What? This is a genuine thing?

Really someone should call the Jarman brothers and inspire them to write “Black boxes: the underground world of Bang&Olufsen”.

Ha ha – that’s just down the road from my house ?

But I just need two suitable Beovisions and a slightly older VHS player than the two I already have, and then I’ll be able to connect it all up!
