How are the Pinch rollers replaced? I got a set of pinch rollers (DSP) for my 5500 Type I, but I’m unsure how to replace them.

Well, once I had the courage to remove the spring washers on all the spindles everything went smoothly: the rollers were a simple ‘slide pin/insert new wheel’ and all the moving parts/spindles/slides got cleaned and lubricated.

I still have the low level/muddy sound which may need to go to a tech with the tools needed to make height and azimuth adjustments.  Can any one recommend a tech in NYC area?

well I realize the models arent the same .. I was merely suggesting (your) Service Man and a thorough clean might surprise you. (sorry for the long winded explanation- I just completed mine last night- still on a ‘repair high’)

I just had to do similar to my beocord 5500. Lisa at DSP was really helpful pointing out “find if its mechanical first”.

you can set (the 5500) in ‘service mode’ by holding the [stop] button + pressing [play] (check your service manual for your model). I was then able to test the capstan and reel motor’s voltage (in idle, and playback in both directions) —mine were: Capstan ±12.99v and Reel ±4.56V

after replacing all belts/rubber and checking voltage. I then disassembled all the spindles and transport slides (not touching the head) to thoroughly clean and lubricate (hah I could’ve started here). My issue was the L reel was so sticky it would skip, play, then bog-repeat.

    <sorry I don’t know the part names here…>

if you can also clean the ‘brake’ and ‘the grooved wheel’  (by the [Turn] motor), along with the transport ‘sled’ (containing the transport head/pin rollers assembly) thing may go in your favor.

I just got done cleaning the transport module—lots of stick greasy to be cleaned out. Both sides now play and FF RW works but there remains two issues.  I hope @Dillen or @Grgur Pauker may have some suggestions…

    1. How are the Pinch rollers replaced? I got a set of pinch rollers (DSP) for my 5500 Type I, but I’m unsure how to replace them.
    2. After getting Play and FF and RW working, the output vol is low and muffled. How could I correct this? (I was careful not to touch any settings of the play head, all components look fine/nothing burnt or darkened).

Thanks for any links, info, tips 👍

My Beocord 5500 is experiencing a similar symptom, new belts and feet from DSP (surprisingly straight forward replacement). I wish I got the roller wheels, I had to reorder

Unfortunately, tape will play side 1 but…

    • side 2 volume is muddy and lower
    • press [turn] side 2 plays for about 1-3sec. STOP ->Standby
    • FF or REW – LEDs show movement, but no tape spin, about 5sec. STOP ->Standby

Also noticed the head travel seems ‘sticky’ doesnt “slide” easily. (I going to go thru the whole Transport area: capstans, head, wheels, with a Qtip and some IPA )

Any suggestions for essentials lubricant and lubrication points? (if any)

RE: BEOsystem 5500 to Smart speakers

    HI BEOWorld,

I just inherited a BEOsystem 5500 with two enormous JBL cabinets. But Im currently setup with smart speakers in my apt . Is there a Bluetooth “Transmitter” for sending the BEO audio around the house to smart speakers? For better or worse, Im locked into the Apple ecosystem and would hope to find a DIY or compatible product in 2025

(Im still unsure if I’d utilize the Speaker 2din ports or some other BEOMaster connection to a ‘transmitter’ unit)

    Thanks for any insights!

    HI BEOWOrld,

I love the BEOtooth development. Bravo!

I just inherited a BEOsystem 5500 with two enormous JBL cabinets. Im currently setup with smart speakers in my apt . IS there a similar project for a Bluetooth “Transmitter” for sending the BEO audio around the house to smart speakers?

Im excited to get a BEOTooth, and any insights on how I could bring this vintage classic into my modern listening home. (Im still unsure if I’d utilize the Speaker 2din ports or some other connection to a ‘transmitter’ unit)
