BRONZE MemberHello
I’ve had an Ouverture/Overture (large clamper, 2002, I believe) for a few years now and I’ve just replaced the drive belt for the door mechanism that had become increasingly reluctant to open the doors fully. I’m happy to say that the doors are now working perfectly again and it’s caused me to want to resolve another annoying issue that I’ve had since purchasing it. The tape deck sounds extremely muffled and audio output is very low. I’ve had a brief look online about this but haven’t found anything concrete. I’m almost certain it’s nothing to do with azimuth because recordings I make on the BeoSound are just as muffled and quiet when played back as commercially produced tapes.
To try and describe it, it’s like I’ve put a pair of ear defenders on and can only hear the low and mid frequencies at a much lower volume compared to a CD or aux source at the same displayed volume level. I’ve tried cleaning the head with isopropyl alcohol but this made no difference at all. Before I go tinkering around too much I wondered if anyone else had experienced this issue with their Ouverture or BeoCord etc that uses a similar mechanism and had any suggestions? I did enquire with a few vintage hifi repair shops near to me but it seems nobody wants to touch B&O stuff.
I’m reasonably competent with basic electronics and repair but don’t own specialised equipment such as a scope. I could borrow one if necessary.
Thanks very much for any advice 🙂

GOLD MemberHas the drive belt in the tape deck been replaced?
Not sure if it can cause the symptoms you describe, but with the age of the system it might be pretty loose by now. Also it is a good idea to replace it before it turn into a sticky black mess inside the tape deck.
If you choose to do this also consider replacing the belt for the clamper

BRONZE MemberHi Madskp
I have not replaced either, no. I haven’t noticed any symptoms with the clamp and the tape deck appears to physically operate fine (forward, reverse, play all seem strong and the tape plays at the correct speed). But would you recommend this as a general preventative maintenance step anyway?
Thank you

GOLD MemberBased on the three Ouvertures and one Beocenter 2500 I have I would say that it was strongly needed in all of them.
This thread was about the first one I fixed https://forum.beoworld.org/forums/topic/beosound-ouverture-cd-and-tape-faulty/#post-22329
Note that the posts in the thread does not come in the right order
