When I turn up the volume the sound moves to the right speaker when I turn it down it moves to the left speaker. Very annoying. Any idea what to do about it? If I have to change the pot will a former  bass pot work?

Sure it’s not just swapped sliders?
Volume should be the leftmost slider.

Does the balance control work as intended?
Bass and treble potentiometers are identical (if memory serves), Balance has reverse tracks, and the volume control has tabs for loudness.
So no, you cannot use anything but a volume potentiometer for volume.

The balance works fine. To be more precise: If I balance the input to the volume control with the small pots you can access from the underside (using the phono pots) so that the two channels are equal when the volume slider is at 3. Then if I move the volume slider to 4 the left speaker becomes much louder. Then if I move the slider further up the scale to 5 the balance at first becomes equal but at 6 the right speaker becomes a little louder. And so on!

The volume control has a lot of  connections so perhaps the problem could be elswhere?

Strange symptom, but could well be a bad volume potentiometer.
Note, there are two different types (of all the potentiometers), they have different
mountings, and they are not interchangeable.

Yes it probably is! I was just hoping! Its the second set op potentiometers with the first one the volume pot was completelyu worn out, one channel had very little resistance. I have had the other type also. So perhaps nothing can be done about it besides buying another 4400 and hope the volume pot is ok. I have a suspicion though that they all have problems. I add a photo of the type in question.

That’s the type used for serial number 1524001 or greater.
I have had many Beomaster 4400 on the bench and only had very few bad potentiometers – but it can and does happen.

Sounds like the right amplifier has more gain.
