Hi all,

I’m looking for advice on a BeoSound 9000 Mk3 (Type 2571) with an intermittent CD problem.

Background

The original optical pickup was replaced with a new unit from Quickcycle. The replacement part number was verified against the original before installation.

Unfortunately, the symptoms remained largely unchanged after the replacement.

Symptoms

• Sometimes CDs start immediately.
• Sometimes the player ends up in PAUSE.
• Sometimes repeated retries eventually succeed.
• Once playback has started, track skipping often works normally.
• Occasionally the system can switch between multiple CDs without issue.
• At other times several CDs fail one after another.
• On at least one occasion the player was playing normally and then stopped abruptly.
• During some failed attempts the disc appears to accelerate to an unusually high speed.

Service mode results

TM71

• Passed successfully (TM OK).

TM73

• Fails on all CD positions.
• Disc spins up rapidly, then reports an error.
• Position 1 reports error 7.
• Positions 2-6 report error 3.

TM63

• Starts the turntable motor.
• Disc appears to rotate at a very high speed.

TM67

• Behaves the same as normal playback.
• Usually ends in failure.

TM27 error log

After clearing the log and running only TM67 until failure:

• Multiple CD error 3 entries (radial error).
• Multiple CD error 7 entries (subcode error).
• Two APS error 15 entries.

Notably:

• No CD error 2 (focus error).
• No new CD error 4 (turntable motor error).

Questions

Given these test results:

1. Would you suspect the new pickup, the pickup ribbon cable/connection, PCB41 (servo board), or something else?
2. Is a failing TM73 after pickup replacement pointing towards a known issue?
3. Has anyone seen a BS9000 that can sometimes play perfectly and then suddenly stop, while producing mainly CD error 3 and 7?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Jeroen
