BRONZE MemberWe’ve just recently purchased a fully restored vintage Beogram 1000 but are having issues playing records. We’ve spent some time troubleshooting the setup but are now completely stuck. Any advice would be much appreciated!
Below is a description of the setup, our notes with a description of the issues we face and pictures.

Description
- Beolab 5000 is the amplifier.
- The Beolab sends audio output to Sonos speakers via the RCA output.
- Beomaster 5000 is the tuner (not to be confused with the newer Beomaster 5000 amplifier).
- The Beomaster sends radio audio to the Beolab via a DIN cable connected to the Tuner input.
- The Beolab plays radio from the Beomaster without any issues.
- Beogram 1000 is the turntable.
- The Beogram is fitted with a built-in RIAA preamplifier.
- The Beogram is fitted with an SP6-7 pickup cartridge.
- When the Beogram is connected to the Beolab via a DIN cable and plugged into AUX/Tape/Tuner, there is no sound.
- When the Beogram is connected to the Beolab via a DIN cable and plugged into Phono, with the Phono setting set to High, there is no sound.
- When the Beogram is connected to the Beolab via a DIN cable and plugged into Phono, with the Phono setting set to Low, there is sound from the turntable. However, the volume is low and there is significant noise/hum. The noise/hum is present even before the turntable is started and increases when the turntable begins playing.

Notes

- The seller of the Beogram 1000 stated that he has restored approximately 25 Beogram 1000 turntables and that the SP6-7 pickup cartridge was cleaned by a specialist.
- It is generally expected that a Beogram 1000 equipped with an RIAA preamplifier should be connected to the AUX input on the Beolab. It should not be connected to the Phono input because the signal has already been amplified by the RIAA preamplifier.
- It is noteworthy that audio from the Beogram is only heard through the Phono input on the Beolab when it is set to Phono Low. This could indicate that the RIAA preamplifier in the Beogram 1000 may be faulty.
- We are considering having the Beolab serviced, hoping that this might resolve the issue.
