Thanks for the reply Martin, that is a relief. The reason for thinking that the pointer did engage the rails was the description in the service manual for changing the bulb:
“The scale is dismantled, after which the rails, on which the pointer slides, are dismantled by removing the two screws that holds the clamping pieces at the two ends. The pointer is tilted up on the lower end without removing the scale string from the pointer.”
Original:
”Skalaen demonteres hvorefter skinnerne, hvorpå lysviseren glider, kan demonteres ved at fjerne de to skruer der fastholder spaendestykkerne ved de to ender. Viseren vippes op pa den nederste ende uden at fjerne skalasnoren fra viseren.”
If the pointer just leans against the rails I see no reason for dismantling the rails.
