    Hi guys,

Recently i acquired a beautiful (complete) Beovision AV9000 with the iconic triangle-shaped speaker.

I was wondering if there’s a way to use the speaker and the built-in surround module without the CRT screen.

I wasn’t able to find any thread about this topic, but if there is, i apologize for adding another one.

    Thanks!

Hi Roderic, I did think about this some time ago, but abandoned the idea, and bought a BeoSystem 3. When taking a look here: https://beocentral.com/av9000controlcenter, it seems encouraging! What connections are there on the ‘control center’? If there is a (digital) audio in, there might be a chance you could mount a modern tv on it, and feed the audio signal to the control center. Controlling that modern (non B&O) tv with a Beo4 will be another story, maybe a Neomesteren product could provide for that. And setting the surround levels etc. (if at all possible) must be done through a menu, so the ‘control center’ has to have a video output that the modern TV can handle.

Maybe you can share some photographs of the connections between the monitor and the control center?

    Regards, Johan

This thread is less promising: https://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/t/16929.aspx and speaks about a bespoke cabling between monitor & control center. Here is a danish manual that indeed indicates there is a bespoke control center cabling: https://radioogtveksperten.dk/images/manualer/tv/AV_9000.pdf.

    Thanks for your reply Johan.

I’ve read that the surroundmodule in the av9000 is non-digital and really supplies more of a pseudo-surround experience than a proper one.

Since the IR receiver is mounted on the screen, there is no (easy) way for me to just control the audio unit without the CRT.

Switching on the speaker unit without a connection with the screen results in an error code on the display on the speaker. The screen however functions without the control unit.

I’ll post some pictures in the evening when I’m home again.

IMG_8939IMG_8940IMG_8941IMG_8942On the third photo you can see the connector for the standmotor and a masterlink cable which are both connected to the control unit.

    Sounds a bit hopeless imho… 🙁

If your aim is to have a modern screen with an iconic triangular shape speaker, you could of course get a BeoLab 10 (and find a, for you, suitable way to play the TV’s sound).

Beolab 10 combined with a beosystem 3 would be the most obvious solution.

It’s just a pitty the AV9000 couldn’t be upcycled; on paper it would’ve been like a dream setup: a stand alone speaker with an integrated surround module. It just lacks the most basic modern inputs to make it workable I’m afraid.

Thanks Johan for trying to find a solution, much appreciated!

Just adding my 2 cents to this topic as I also think it would be cool to be able to repurpose this piece of art.

Looking at the service manual for the TV part of the AV9000 ( I have not seen on for the control center) I can see that the Masterlink connector for the control centre use a different pinout than the normal. For example the data +  and data – are on pin 8 and 9 instead of pin 1 and 2. They are interconnected in the TV though, so it is Masterlink data. Also the Audio part is on different pins and instead of being balanced audio in normal Masterlink it just looks like a left and right analog audio signal with a ground, so it it could be activated it should be fairly easy to supply an analog audio signal to it.

However the biggest issue is probably how to turn it on since the IR receiver is in the TV part of the AV9000, and is the probably transmitted as Masterlink data to active the control center. And since this principle has not be used for other products I have a hard time seeing what could substitute the TV part of the AV9000.

Speaking of AV9000 I have four AV9000 Audio kits in my collection. It is much like a Beolink Converter 1611 for connection to a audiosystem with datalink, but with two masterlink plugs and feed with power from the TV via some extra pins in the Masterlink cable. I have not been able to verify if they work since it’s a little special.

So cable-wise there is some hope but remote-wise it’s a different story?

The fact that there’s no online evidence of someone who’s been able to pull this off on an old unit like this, seems like a bad sign.

Right. Of course there might be somewhere inside the control center were it can be switched on, but that would require both the service manual an some understanding of the circuits to figure out I guess.
