First, a quick rant about how badly B&O has treated its loyal customers—and people like me who’ve tried to join their ranks.

The BeoSound Moment was the second B&O product I ever bought. The first was a BeoVision 11, which I adored (and still do). When I asked my dealer (B&O Canterbury—now out of business) about the Moment, they seemed oddly hesitant and asked a lot of questions about how I’d use it. That was a red flag, but they sold me one in the end. I integrated it with my BeoVision 11 and had nothing but problems from day one.

The “Jukebox” (their name for the tablet) constantly had trouble connecting with the “SoundHeart” (the dock). They blamed my Wi-Fi setup, saying B&O products were known to have issues with certain network gear—mine was made by Apple—and suggested switching to another brand they’d had better luck with.

Let me tell you: I work in tech as a software engineer. Low-level network incompatibilities like that are extremely rare. I never took it seriously. I think the staff believed what they were saying, but in reality, I think it was just superstition—what we’d call “cargo culting” in the industry. They saw a pattern where none existed.

I believe, and still do, that B&O’s flaky software was the real problem. Software built for networked environments is supposed to be self-healing. Dropouts and disconnects happen, but the system should recover transparently. That’s how the internet works. If your software doesn’t handle this gracefully, it’s because it wasn’t built properly.

Eventually, I found that a factory reset would let the Jukebox and SoundHeart find each other again—but it still wouldn’t play music through my BeoVision 11. B&O said updates were coming to fix the issue. Eventually, one did allow me to play music via the TV, but the Moment still needed regular factory resets to re-establish the connection.

Then there was the interface. It was a complete disaster. It tried to merge all my “liked” Deezer tracks into my library. If I had an album on my DLNA server (a Drobo running Twonky), it would show duplicate tracks—or sometimes even a duplicate album—based on what I’d liked. In the end, I unliked everything on Deezer just to make the UI usable.

Even when the Jukebox and SoundHeart stayed connected, I still had to reset it regularly. Sometimes it stopped playing tracks (possibly due to an expired Deezer session), or playback became choppy. But I stubbornly persevered. I’m sure others would’ve returned it much sooner. I really wish I had.

Then came the 2.0 software rewrite—the big update that was supposed to fix everything. It took the software from beta. And I mean that literally. The original software was alpha: barely functional, experimental, and unstable. The update brought it to beta: still buggy, but mostly working. The difference was huge.

Then they discontinued the product. A few minor bugfixes followed, but B&O essentially walked away from it.

B&O shipped a product with broken software. Every time I raised issues, they blamed something else. After years of stringing me along, they finally released a half-decent update—then discontinued the product.

Now to the real point of this post.

Like many others, my Jukebox developed a smudge in the centre of its screen. I had a feeling I knew what was happening: the battery had expanded and was pressing against the back of the display. I didn’t think it was dangerous, just annoying. So I kept using it.

Later, after moving to a 4K TV, I put the Moment in storage. Today, while clearing out old gear, I took it out and connected it to power. As soon as I placed the Jukebox on the SoundHeart, it made a hissing noise that got louder—then a loud pop. I freaked out and pulled it off the dock immediately. A burning smell lingered.

Worried it was a fire risk, I asked ChatGPT. It told me the sounds were signs of thermal runaway—a battery failure that can cause fires or explosions. It said that if I hadn’t removed the Jukebox, it might have caught fire or exploded. These fires release can’t be put out with water. It advised me not to power it again, and that it could still ignite even while unplugged. It also warned me not to handle it unless I wanted to risk my fingers.

So now I’m stuck. I live in an apartment and need to dispose of this dangerous item. After all the grief this product gave me—the gaslighting over its software, the awful resale value — now this?

I really wanted to love B&O. But they make it so hard.

Let this be a warning: If your BeoSound Moment has a smudge on the screen, disconnect it now. Store it safely until it can be disposed of or repaired by someone who knows what they’re doing. It’s too late for mine—the battery’s already started to fail.

    To be fair:
This is not a problem of B&O equipment it is a common and known problem of LiOn batteries.

They degenerate over the years, become chemical and electrical instable. Remember for example the Samsung Note 7(?) phones where they had massive problems with burning phones and airlines prohibited to take these phones on flights. Exploding Apple airpods, e-bike batteries etc.
This is a common problem of LiOn and LiPo battery cells – which nobody wants to have officialy in the news. Blowing up is the first stage of fault and the next is smoke and fire.
Had those bad experiences over the years on MP3 players, Laptops, phones and PDAs.

That’s the reason why I will not buy an electric car:
Imagine sitting on a 600kg LiOn Battery “expanding” or worse due to faults or aging processes of that bomb under everybodys seat in the car.
    No thanks. 🙂

Even for the fire service these things are a problem: The german fire department uses cranes to put burning electrical cars in a big container of water/fluids and just floods the car. They can’t do anymore since lithium doesn’t care about water trying to extinguish it.

I bought a Moment – not that long ago – it really is not a good product – I now use it as a way to play my Amazon Echo Dot through Beolab 4000s! I am about to get a simpler device to do this so the Moment will be relegated to display only! No battery issues at present but I am sure it will do. I share your disdain!

Confess I also have a BV11 – less enamoured with that than you are – remote not easy to use in the dark and the drama turning it on with the Bang & Olufsen coming up before anything happens – confess the other sets in the house are now LG as they just turn on immediately. I have one that works with a B&O stage and is fine. I regret getting rid of the BV5 which still worked fine but connectivity was becoming tricky. Though of course my BC2 does not really connect to the BV11 as not HDMI – only sound.

The speakers are all fine though!

I can empathise with your frustrations. I purchased a BeoSound Moment shortly after B&O introduced this device… what… ten years ago? It looked nice and, when it worked, it was great. I never saw the point of having the Jukebox and Soundheart as separate components and that wood effect side of the Jukebox seemed a pointless gimmick; it looked awful too.

But the Moment never really functioned well or consistently in all the years I owned it. It crashed or locked on a regular basis for no apparent reason. The Moment and the B&O app had problems communicating with each other (don’t get me started about the App!). B&O Support were, to all intents and purposes, useless when I asked for help. I considered the Moment a monumental waste of money. A disgrace given how much B&O kit costs. And then, they discontinued it shortly after introducing it. WTF was B&O thinking?

It got so bad that my local dealer eventually offered me a good trade-in deal: I got a Core and a Halo for next to nothing in exchange for my troublesome Moment. Oh, and it did have what might have been a small ‘smudge’ in the middle of the Jukebox screen. I just assumed that the adhesive holding the glass in place had deteriorated. I have no idea if the battery was at fault.

I can’t say that I’m much impressed with the Core or Halo either. The former crashes faithfully every two weeks or so and has to be rebooted. The Halo is, in my opinion, a fancy, overpriced volume control. I rarely even remember that it’s there.

Thank goodness for my trusty old BeoSound 9000 CD player. I’ve had it for 25 years and it has never let me down. It’s on its third CD motor but that’s OK. It has seen very heavy use and moving parts wear.

Seems that you use the BROne.
    Why not use a Beo4?

As for the B&O logo – just set some Quick Start timers and it turns on immediately (with the curtains).

There’s a Quick Start option in the settings on the BV11 which you can use to set a period of time where the TV should be available to start quickly.  I think I had it set to between 8am and 12am on mine and it really does make a difference.  You won’t see the B&O logo when you turn it on and you’ll still get to see the curtains open.  The TV will use more power in standby but it’s probably not worth thinking about.  This also makes a big difference when you go to add the TV to a multiroom experience.

That was markup and it wasn’t visible in the editor.  I don’t think the forum is configured properly.  If it is this will show up as bold, and this will show up as italic.

Ouch, thats a good deal? Did the Moment cost 5x more than that combo.

I was at B&O when the Moment first came out and the dealer explained it to me I could hardly keep a straight face when he told me the price. I ask him why I couldn’t do the same thing with an iPad for 1/10 the price he didn’t know what to say.

I loved the idea of it and the look but the price was stupid. I also watched as B&O abandoned the product and it was really disappointing to watch.

My essence’s work great,  never crash. But I agree the halo is just a volume and my buttons device.  It really doesn’t do much without the intelligence which it really should come with for the price its at.

Yes, an arm and a leg. My adventures with the Moment, and subsequently, the B&O app marked the beginning of my chronic decline in faith in B&O.
