Hi all – it’s been a while since I’ve been on, I used to be a gold member, however, since I downgraded it wouldn’t let me log on, so I’ve had to create a new log in, hence this is my “1st” post.

Anyway – I have a Beolab 14 sub which has blown a 7 pin IC on the power supply circuit. I know exactly where it is and can see it, however,  I’m unable to identify what the lettering is on it, as the top blew off. Funnily enough, before I discovered the fault I found a small piece of black plastic when dismantling the sub and threw it in the bin, thinking it was just a clip or something that had broken.

Having been through 2 full bin bags (I kid you not) trying to locate it, I thought I’d turn to the worldly wise on the forum to see if some kind soul can help.

The IC in question is the one at the tip of the pen in the picture. Maybe someone has a Beolab 14 sub on the bench with the innards out, or a used PSU lying around that they could investigate for me ?

I’m currently contemplating going through the bin bags again, however, no-one should have to do that twice in their life. I shall spare you the details on the contents.

Many thanks in advance – the sub is simple to take apart (some screws on the base), although I certainly wouldn’t want someone to open a working sub.

    Hey,

Just blew the same IC on my Beoplay S8.

I’m wondering if you got it replaced and had to change anything else? I don’t know if it took other components with it.

I’ve added a couple pics of mine.

Still waiting to get mine back from the chap who’s replacing the blown IC.

Thevone he ordered had incorrect pin configuration, so he had to get one in from China.  Fingers crossed nothing else needs replacing, but that’s why I’m having him check it all over rather than me just replace the IC.

Ill chase him this week as it should be ready about now.

Would be awesome if you could give an update when you have heard back. I’ve checked the area, the diode and resistor are both measuring fine.

Will do ! My surrounding area looked a lot less damaged than yours, so it’s good news that your components are testing ok.

Yeah, the diode top has burned slightly, so if you could, I would appreciate if you could send be the numbers on top of your diode.

The diode is the one marked in blue.

Apologies for the late reply. Sub apparently repaired (IC changed) fully checked over electronically and given a clean bill of health. I’ll hopefully be collecting it tomorrow, so will take some close ups for you.

Also managed to find a relatively local Beolab 2 at a sensible price to go with my 8000’s, so happy days all round.

If anyone wants a Beolab 14 let me know !

    Cheers

    Thanks Jonny!

I’ve ordered the IC chip, so I hope the problem is “as easy” as yours! Would love some pictures when you get it back.

It’s been a while since I took the think apart and I’m progressing well on re-assembly, although I’ve hit a headscratcher I hope you can help with Jacob.

I have a ribbon cable, which doesn’t stretch very far and appears to be folded back on itself. I’m wondering if it goes to either of the 2 connectors shown in the pic. There’s no connector on the end, so thinking the top connector might be the one, but it really struggles to get anywhere near it, let alone slot in. It could be that the connector has come off the ribbon whilst it’s been away, but don’t think it likely.

Could be that the 2 connectors are redundant, as is the ribbon ?

All the connections on the board with the blown IC are mated up with their respective cables.

    Cheers

    Jonny

Thanks for the pictures! I could finally decipher the text on top of the diode 🙂

The flex cable goes to the ICEpower module, see pic.

Brilliant – so it’s external to the pcbs. Makes sense now.

    Will have a look tomorrow.

    Great team work !

Yeah it is on the side of the icepower pcb.

All back together – just awaiting my Powerlink to RJ45 cable so I can test it.

Hi Jacob – hope all is well. Did you get your diode swapped over ?

My Beolab 14 is back with me and all connected up, but no switching on from the Powerlink connector. I’m using a Powerlink to RJ45 connector, but no response from the sub.

I’m wondering if I’ve missed something fundamental, although all connections are connected, even that pesky ribbon cable.

One thing I’m wondering is whether I have a missing connection right in the middle of the ICE power module. There’s a block connector socket on the left hand side of(opposite to all the caps), approx half way up. Is yours inhabited ?

Another thing that’s occurred to me is whether there’s a reset switch that needs a prod ?

    Cheers

    Hey Jonathan,

No I haven’t received the IC yet, but hopefully it will arrive tomorrow, so I can fit it and assembly it in the weekend.

The connectors in the middle of the board (marked) are unused, I guess they are used for tuning/testing.

I don’t think a reset should be needed, as the power has been disconnected long enough, so there should be no remaining power in the caps etc.

Are there any light showing in front of the sub?

Thanks for the quick reply. The only light I can see is a white knob type thing underneath. Bear in mind I’ve never had this working, so don’t know the functionality etc.

Nothing lights up at the moment.

    Cheers

Okay, I never really noticed the light, but according to this thread, it should show something when receiving a signal.
