BRONZE MemberCould anyone please help me – trying to connect a B&O Beogram 5500 record player to Kanto speakers. Have attached a photo of the set up; 7 pin din to rca cable > pre-amp > speaker. Faint sound coming from record player itself so that seems to be working, but no sound out of speaker! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

BRONZE MemberHello Emma, you have an active speaker, so you need additional Line Level Booster connected between your preamp and your speaker, see attached photo for a proven one, from Nobsound (Douk Audio).
Kind regards, Nebojsa

BRONZE MemberHi Emma, have you tried connecting your turntable directly to the speakers?

BRONZE MemberI did try this initially, but no luck, and after some research it appeared that the 5500 doesn’t have a pre-amp built in so others had bought an external one…

BRONZE MemberI have read that I might need a specific Beogram DIN to phono cable? But not sure why that would be…

BRONZE MemberI bought a line level booster but unfortunately this hasn’t worked, still just receiving static…
19 September 2025 at 21:00 #69780FOUNDER MemberDear Emma,
Your pre-amp seems to be the same as one sold by Sounds Heavenly.
If yes, you might ask Steve’s help to solve your problem.
A few questions to help your investigations:
- I noticed on your picture that the pre-amp’s LED is orange, isn’t it a warning (check the user guide)?
- Do your speaker work with another source plugged in the RCA inputs?
- Did you select the RCA input with the input selector of your speaker (it does not seem to automatic)?
- Looking at the YU5 user guide, this speaker has optical inputs that I don’t see on your picture. Are you sure yours is a YU5?
- Is the turntable’s cartridge correctly plugged on the reading arm?
If you have another product with RCA inputs, you could connect the pre-amp out to this product.
Kind regards,
Yann.

The one you’re using is likely connected to the wrong pins and also needs the ground wire.

BRONZE MemberThe speaker in your photo seems to be just Kanto YU, basic model, so does not have input type selector…

BRONZE MemberHi Emma, I sympathize with you at this moment, as I imagine you are overwhelmed with responses and suggestions! Nevertheless, your first thing to eliminate is the DIN5/7-to-RCA cable, as where everything starts (or ends) is literally in the pinout compatibility from the BG5500 DIN5/7 plug to the corresponding female DIN5/7 plug on a DIN-to-RCA cable. So, either Sounds Heavenly (Beogram to non-B&O device phono preamp, amplifier, receiver, with internal ground link) or AV Connection (AV-advance B&O turntable adapter) cable should work, as both are specificaly wired to work with any Beogram turntable. Do note, again, that Sounds Heavenly cable does not come with a separate ground wire next to the two RCA’s, so is pre-wired to make it compatible with any non-B&O device, because not every preamp or amp/receiver comes with a ground terminal to connect to…

BRONZE MemberHello Emma, I need to clarify once again! Sorry if I was confusing you. As I had already said on Sep 17th, your best bet is to get the correct DIN-to-RCA cable, then go through your RIAA preamp to your speakers, as they do have an amplifier built-in. This should simply work…

BRONZE MemberHi Yann, Mark and Nebojsa,
Thank you so much for your continued help an invaluable – I am so appreciative! Apologies for my slow response, I am juggling trying to get this record player to work, while caring for my newborn baby!
In the first instance I have bought a new DIN to RCA cable from Sounds Heavenly as it does seem that B&O pins are wired differently – fingers crossed this works… will keep you posted!
Thanks so much again, Emma

Emma, if you get sound but have a hum using the Sounds Heavenly cable, return it and get one that has a separate ground wire that you connect to the thumb screw on your phono preamp. I included an example in my previous reply.

BRONZE MemberSo happy to report that with the new DIN to RCA cable from Sound Heavenly, the record player works! Luckily there doesn’t appear to be any extra hum, (thank you Mark for the suggestion though)
Thank you so much to everyone for all your help – I never ever would’ve gotten it working if it weren’t for you all!
While playing records today, we got some smiles from our son ❤️
