    Hi Martin

    It is a BG 4002/ 5221

the plastic ruler is the newer type which already has additional markings for the opto sensor ..

please see photo for position of carriage with respect to the end switch- see it seems to stop short when stylus is at innermost of lead-out groove.

I know the carriage activates the switch if stylus is up so it can go past the end of lead out groove- but if the stylus is down and switch is activated – does the stylus arm lift before returning across record – I am afraid it may destroy stylus by arm returning whilst stylus is still down..

thanks in advance for any advice

I am afraid it may destroy stylus by arm returning whilst stylus is still down.

FYI, you can test the operation with the cartridge removed. Remove the cartridge, put on a record, add a small weight to the tone arm to simulate the weight of the cartridge (so the arm will fall when appropriate). Hit “start”. Once the arm drops into position at the lead-in groove, give it a slight nudge toward the center of the record. The arm should continue moving to the lead-out groove, lift and return. Testing without a cartridge is the prudent way of verifying proper operation. HTH.

Does the carriage hit on something? Cables near the transformer, perhaps?
    Transport safety screws losened?

    Hi Glitch

    Thanks for theย  suggestion

I have tried it and the arm IS raised when the end stop switch is triggered….so that at least is good.

I estimate that i would need to insert a 5mm or so spacer to trigger the return at the correct point..:(

I would has expected that the arm return is triggered optically rather than mechanically…so there may still be an issue though…

Also the arm return has now happened a couple of times by itselfย  half way through a disk side….hmmm

    Thanks for your interest

    Cheers

    Hi Martin

No the carraige doesnt seem to hit anything…when the stylus is in the end groove next to the label, the arm is still parallel to the sensor arm….and the carraige motor has stopped turning.

If i move the stylus to over the label the motor will trigger again until the end stop is triggered.

The end switch should not be reached at the end of playing a record.
It should only be reached if no record is found.

End of record is indeed optically sensed using the ruler.
Has the main board been rebuilt with new capacitors, trimmers etc?

    Hi Martin

Main board has not been rebuilt YET……..

I have been trying to establish just what is needing attention as the person I bought it off could not get it going at all………

so far cleaning contacts / plugs etc has made the most difference .ย  at this point the only problem is the arm returnย  and a blown globe on the 45 speed dial…

I suppose i am trying to avoid a pcb rebuild but think it is required in near future….it is nearly 50 yrs old………and the lid is a mess with broken hinge points

    Cheers

It will need a rebuild. They all do by now.

New electrolytic capacitors. Replace like for like type-wise.
    New trimmers incl. adjusting.
