Just added a Beocord to my collection of Beocords but it has an issue that I need help with. All functions work properly except FWD/REW. Capacitors/Belt have been replaced. PLAY/TURN work fine with good sound.
When I press any of those two, the display LED shows the movement for FWD or REW and the unit goes to standby.
For FWD the head engages (just like Play) and the reel turns for a second or two and goes into standby with the head still engaged in play mode.
For REW the head engages (just like Play) and supply reel turns fast but not the take up reel and the tape comes out of the tape frame and goes into standby after 1-2 seconds.
Looks like the protect mode is getting activated for some reason. Not sure why play is getting activated for normal FWD/REW operation.
Any guidance/help in resolving the issue will be appreciated !!
Thanks
5 September 2024 at 21:09 #58915Hi,
My Beocord 4500 had the same symptoms and possibly the same mechanism. I found the solution in this thread. A small worm gear was slipping on the axle, due to an invisible crack in the gear. Dismantled, cleaned and glued the gear solved the problem.

12 September 2024 at 22:37 #59037Hi Sverre..Thank you for your response. I did check your earlier post on the subject and tried the approach but it didn’t work. Manually tuning the gear does move the other parts. The unit plays well, sounds good but its irritating that FF/REW does not work. Not sure why PLAY gets engaged when pressing FF/REW.
Thanks
13 September 2024 at 22:06 #59065Sorry the solution that did the trick on my unit did not work out for you. As an amateur, my experience is limited and I am unfortunately out of alternative suggestions. May be others have had success with other options to try out.

14 September 2024 at 09:00 #59067It can be difficult to spot the crack in the worm gear.
I have seen this several times, and I suggest you look again.
Or simply pull off the gear and glue it back on using a good 2-comp. epoxy.Martin

19 September 2024 at 21:05 #59201Hi, Martin, I checked again and the worm gear is glued well. See below links to videos that show the gear movement for play/ff/rew.

Let me know if you see anything out of sequence.
Thanks
20 September 2024 at 05:48 #59204I have no idea what I did but magically now fwd/rew both are working.
Only issue – when I hit forward the mechanism works as expected BUT when the tape reaches the end, the head turns and tape plays and unit goes to STANDBY with the head still engaged. I have to hit STOP again to bring unit out of STANDBY and head to disengage.
I am not sure if the head should engage for the normal (“>>” or “<<“) function. I can understand that head would engage in the search (play+fwd/rew) mode.
REW works now, its noisy but works.
