I’ve had a problem with my Beocenter 8500 tape deck for a while now. I thought that a new belt would fix it but it hasn’t. It’s the Type 1 tape deck (the one with a single belt, and 2 motors).
It does work but it’s got an issue. If you start to play a tape, you can see the pinch rollers turn, but the spindles don’t. Afte a second or two, it stops.
This can be solved if I just fast-forward or rewind for just a moment. Once that’s been done, it will always play fine – every time. You can then stop and start playing several times – works every time. Next day, I switch it on and try to play a tape however, same thing always happens.
I had ordered a new belt for it anyway as it’s never been replaced, and I replaced that, but it’s only when I started to have a proper poke around inside that I realised – the belt doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the tape spindles. It has a separate motor driving those with a little cog that moves from left to right, depending which one needs to be turning. Replacing the belt has therefore not solved the issue (and I added a little watch oil to that cog and to the spindles, while I had it open).
So I can play tapes, but always with this little workaround of having to fast-forward and rewind first. Anyone familiar with the issue?
