BRONZE MemberHi there,
A newbie here and looking for advice on the above as I can’t find anything on the interweb regarding this machine.
As stated it ‘s a Beocord 1700 (type 2662). Picked this up a couple of weeks ago off eBay from the original owner, dates back to the early 80’s.
Looks in reasonable cosmetic condition but needed a good cleanout internally, the usual dust fluff and debris, some lubrication but this seems to have been a well looked after cassette deck as it wasn’t smoothed inside with the usual excess of grease or oil I’ve come across in the past.
Had trouble on one channel, the led display going right over into the red on switch on and staying there. Giving the record/play switch a good clean and workout with contact cleaner seems to have cured that. Also noticed that the tape counter wasn’t running smoothly, both counter belts were oval so got a couple of good replacements fitted
Comtemptplated changing the large flat capstan belt and the associated square drive belt but they seemed to be ok and getting to them looked to be a right mare of a job so left them as was.
As the deck seemed to play well decided to put the cover back on last night but on playing the bulk of long prerecorded tape (possibley close to a C120 or there abouts) suddenly towards the end I could hear the tape slowing down and heard the deck shutdown as though the auto shutoff had kicked in. Well the tape hadn’t finished and the deck wouldn’t go into play, FF or RW again. Left it unplugged for 5 to 10 mins and tried again and it was working again.
Have now had this happen several times. I believe the motor in these decks is AC not the usual DC type and I would say the motor is actually running quite hot to the touch even though I’ve had it out and lubed both bearings leaving them to soak for a while. I notice that the motor runs constantly so long as power is on which I take to be normal.
Finally braved taking the transport out of the deck to remove, measure and order some replacement belts, the capstan belt though outwardly good seems to lack some stretch and isn’t as taught as I’d epect.
Has anyone got experience with these decks at all? Seems as though there might be a thermal cutout either within the motor or some other means of cutting power if it gets too hot/draws too much current.
Hoping the belts will cure this but not 100% convinced they are the problem.
Any thoughts welcomed.
