I work in video production in Copenhagen, and recently I was working on a small project involving product filming and studio lighting. While planning the shots, I started paying more attention to how much the visual design of a product affects the way it looks on camera.

That got me thinking about Bang & Olufsen. Their products have such a distinctive design that they can almost become part of the story in a video rather than simply being something being filmed.

The same idea applies when editing the footage. I try not to spend equal amounts of time on every small detail. The 80/20 rule in video editing is a useful way of thinking about this: a few important editing decisions can often have a much bigger effect on the finished video than hours spent making tiny adjustments.

For product videos, I usually find that simple lighting works better than trying to make everything overly dramatic. With well-designed products, small details such as reflections, textures, buttons and edges can make a big difference. Moving the camera slowly around the product can also show details that aren’t immediately noticeable when looking at it normally.

I’m curious how other BeoWorld members approach this. Do you prefer seeing classic B&O equipment photographed or filmed in a clean studio environment, or do you think it looks better when the equipment is shown in a real living room or listening environment?

I’d also be interested to hear which B&O products you think are particularly interesting from a visual or design perspective.
