• Re: Beosystem 5000, 5500... wife - hard to choise

Hi, I agree with Adam. The CD 5500 clamp wobble is unfortunately normal, it is a design flaw. But do do my various Sony first gen players. Adam, I think your example had another problem. That said, the CD 50 is good, reliable once sorted, but the 5500 is the better player. I modified my BM 5500 to give it a proper preamp output instead of the silly attenuation.

  • My Beolab 5000

Well, if the tuner is in good technical condition, it doesn’t need such a strong signal. Here, where I live, the nearest TV/FM emitter is almost 200 km away and a screwdriver pulls in many stations, with a lit stereo beacon, albeit with some hiss. Depressing the mono button eliminates hiss completely. My other tuners don’t do that. Even the ReVox. Did you know that the BBC used to have some Beomaster 5000 tuners?

  • Re: Beosystem 5000 with Infinity Kappa

Yes they sound very good, a tad laid-back with slightly recessed treble. And their efficiency is in ESL territory, with that B200 demanding lots of current. To me yet, they are no match for the M70s.

  • Beosystem 5000 with Infinity Kappa

Oh yes. However, the M70s will take about 50-60 W easily. My pair feeds a 40 square-metre dancing room, and they give plenty of volume with great bass. They are on trumpet stands. The smaller MC120 are exceedingly neutral speakers. Very polite, almost electrostatic-like in a way, bar of course the incredible detail true ESL can provide. They take more power but being smaller, they won’t supply the kind of sound you’re after. All in all, I prefer the more coloured M70s.
The BBC you say......didn't know that, I wonder if they have any left is a dusty store room somewhere?
Yes, they used them for 40 years as control tuners in their studios. I think it was Adam or perhaps Tim Jarman, or Haden Boardman (?) who published that information years ago.

Craig, this happens to all of us. Have a good break on this project, do something else, and then go back to it. It will have a happy ending I’m sure. The Wima caps can’t possibly do that, no.

  • Beosystem 5000 with Infinity Kappa
After a few days of listening to music on the M70, I find that: - they eat more power than infinity Kappa, 4 ohms vs 6 ohms and after one hour with 2/3 of the amplifier's power, the temperature protection switches Beosystem off, even though the fan is working. Today I will strip it and change the paste on the radiator.
This shouldn’t be. They are not that power hungry, and I’ve personally never seen or heard that fan work, even powering the M70 speakers

  • Beomaster8000 repair/resoration

Try switching it on with both amp modules disconnected. I’d do that first. Then plug back each amp separately and see what happens. The left side cooler does get quite warm, that’s normal. So to me this is a rather good sign, if anything.

Hi Alf, No time to delve into that tonight but I’ll certainly be around! I have two working ones.
