Might take (up to) 180 days before we know anything further.

I saw the Halo at my dealer on Saturday, and although I was already intrigued since the first leaked video it didn’t disappoint at all, knowing that some people do not like it.

I would have a very limited use-case for my BS1, as my other B&O products are too old, but I still want to have one. That it is a great achievement.

There is probably no good rationale explanation why one would spend ca 700$ on a volume remote control. I am now having tough discussions with the FS (wife), as she states ‘you buy Halo I say Hejdå (goodbye) Big Smile

And then my dealer came up with the great idea that I need a Core as well for my BS9000 😀

I love his enthusiasm.

“I have to work on my core” I tell my wife in return Smile

To be continued, and please do see the Halo IRL it is amazingly cool.

I have a compatibility question regarding Beosound 35?

Is somebody able to test, if the new BeoRemote Halo is showing the meta-data (e.g. title name, album name) when streaming via Airplay to a Beosound 35?

(as expected) only "Airplay" is displayed on the Halo

Many thanks for the quick feedback.

Too bad!

I hoped the BeoRemote Halo could be alternative display for me, because the Besound 35 display does not show the Airplay meta-data.

Does this mean, that the BeoRemote Halo will show the Airplay metadata for all other compatible B&O device (e.g. Beoplay A9)?

Gracenote hasn’t disappeared.

Spotify connect hasn’t disappeared.

B&O has simply chosen to remove those services from products that their customers had already bought and paid for.

...and all that is "fine". (no, not really)

But that is what's driving my decision as a customer. So I won't be buying a Halo, even if I can afford it as an impuls buy. Let's see how this waiting game works for B&O, how many disappointed ex-customers they can afford before they collapse. Enthusiasts can't run brand's profitability.

This is a very exciting setup! You are using the essence like a light switch for music. Brilliant!

This is not my idea, that is literally the phrase B&O used in their flier to describe the Essence Remote: "A light switch for music."

steve1977:
Before i now order so many essence remotes, help me understand a few things please:

* How did you wall-mount it? Did it require you to drill holes into the wall or did you find some less destructive way?

If you buy the wall-mount version it coms with a plate that uses two relatively small screws for mounting.  I can't imagine double-sided tape would hold up but I suppose you could try.  There are some 3M mounting strips (Known in the USA as "Command Strips") that work quite well and might work for this.  But honestly patching the wall if you moved it wouldn't be much different than patching the wall if you move a framed piece of artwork.

The desktop versions are of course trivial to move around.  So if you buy one of those to start you could get a feel for the product without picking a permanent mounting location.

steve1977:
* Does the essence support all NL devices?

It doesn't use NL, so it doesn't support NL devices per se.  It's primarily a Bluetooth remote (BLE 4 I believe), with an IR mode available for legacy devices.  I'm not sure but I *THINK* all NL systems AFTER the Moment have Bluetooth capabilities and will support it.  I have to control my Beosound Moments in IR mode, which it does have available for older devices.  (Yes, the Moment's tablet is detachable and could be moved to the dining table, but I'm afraid of spilling food or drink on it, and frankly it's much nicer to have an unobtrusive table remote that does everything I need.)

I will also note that the device uses a standard Bluetooth protocol for audio control, so if your computer has Bluetooth, you can use a remote to control your computer volume.  Very cool!

steve1977:
* Can i start / stop all speakers from one remote? And also start / stop just one speaker with a different “touch”?

You can stop all speakers by holding down the "stop" (bottom) button for about 5 seconds.  I use this just about every day.  What's particularly clever is that you don't even need to use a remote linked to a device that is playing.  For example, if the music is playing in the bedroom I can stop it by long-pressing the remote in the kitchen or living room even if those rooms aren't playing music.

I'm not aware of any way to start all speakers from a remote, and I don't believe there is a way control any speaker other than the speaker the remote is paired to.  In other words, if I want music on all the speakers I either need to walk around the house touching the top of all remotes, or I need to open up the app and use the multiroom feature to join each device.

steve1977:
* I like to play via airplay to one speaker and then distribute to others via the NL feature (via join or the b&o app). How does this work in combo with the essence? For example, i airplay to device xxx and then join device yyy via the essence. If i now pause device xxx, does device yyy still play?

I never use AP, because I just prefer the way NL works.  (My experience is that startup is faster, I can switch back and forth between iPhone and iPad for control, and if I reboot my phone the music doesn't stop.)  But I did just try what you said and can give you tentative results:  It works great!  I started music on my phone and then used AP to send it to the bedroom. I walked to the kitchen and used "Touch to join" to pull in the stream - it starts up almost instantly.  I then walked to the bedroom and "stopped" the bedroom using the bottom button on the remote.  Music stopped immediately but kept playing in the kitchen.  I opened the AP control on my phone and it appeared that the Beosound Essence (Mk II box, not Essence Remote) was smart enough to mute the music in the bedroom so the kitchen could keep playing the AP stream.

The only other note is that I'd say the remotes work mostly as expected but not quite as flawlessly as I would expect a wired system to work.  That's because in order to have a 9-month battery life the Bluetooth needs to go into low-energy modes and it can take a moment to wake back up.  So if for example I want to turn the volume up a little with a remote I haven't touched in a day, I'll probably start turning it down slowly until I hear the volume change, then ramp it back up to the target volume.  This is because it can take as long as a few seconds to reconnect after sleeping, and you can get unexpected leaps in volume if you go up before down.

All in all I think the Essence Remote is a spectacularly useful product, and can't give it a high enough rating.  When I got my first Essence box it was so I could use the essence remote to control some Beolab 6000s I picked up used for $250 USD.  (I had been running them off my PC beforehand.)  I though it was a bit crazy to spend $1250 for a streamer and remote to control $250 of speakers, but if you look at the list of items in my signature you'll see that it was only the beginning of a very expensive obsession.  I can easily say that without the Essence remote I would only own the Beolab 6000s and wouldn't have purchased any of the other things in my signature.

Get yourself an Essence remote.  You won't regret it!

I don’t believe B&O just chose to remove the services. If I recall correctly there were changes to the T&C’s that they couldn’t or wouldn’t comply with.

And how did they compensate their customers for removing the service they were sold?

I only have 2 of them, and I concur 100% with all what you wrote about this clever object.

I’ll add the following features, even if obvious:

- When you have several local sources defined in your product, including linked sources, pressing the top side of the wheel navigates cyclically amongst them, e.g assuming you have configured TuneIn, Deezer, Line-In (a TV) and a linked Line-In (a turntable connected to another product’ s line-in) as local sources in your product. First press on the top of the wheel of the Essence Remote paired to the product will attempt to join a playing product, otherwise will start the latest played TuneIn station, second press will resume the latest Deezer play queue, third press will bring the TV sound if any, fourth press will bring the sound of your LP if any playing, fifth press back to multiroom source or Tunein, and so on.

- You can navigate forward/backward in the sources supporting it such as TuneIn, Deezer, AP by pressing the right and left side of the wheel.

By promising a fix ..... it’s been a year+ since Gracenote issue appeared.

I wish someone knowledgeable will start a class action for this issue.

Thanks for such a long and helpful response, much appreciated! Very clear now this works.

How long are the screws and do you screw them directly into the wall or need to use one of these plastic anchors?

How you fix it will depend on the surface you are mounting it on.

I would certainly use nylon wall plugs in a brick or concrete wall. Plasterboard needs special wall plugs or there is a danger of the screws working loose after time.

Hi

Does anyone know how to control sources on the Halo.

Mine shows Qplay - which I do not use. The Essence does not let me disable this, my Beolink Intelligence disable Qplay in the Control Interface

Best regards Rudi

Maybe by unchecking Qplay as a local source in the relevant product configuration ? Like for B&O app

Just checked out the video and have two more questions how the Halo works:

1) Does it pause or mute devices? For example, what happens when I "tap" on the Halo a lead speaker or a speaker wiithin the group?

2) How do the favorite works? Are they per device or overall? Can I pick a DLNA source as favorite? Or are the sources limited to GVA commands (same as the BS1)?
