I absolutely agree! I think it’s ridiculous that you have to get the Google voice version to stereo pair of them. I prefer not to have always listening mics in my speakers, but would totally stereo pair the non voice version. I hope enough people complain and they add a software update to the non voice version.

As a pair or solo? I find it pretty difficult to believe that the Balance can replicate the stereo imaging of proper separates; and I don't particularly like how the Balance only supports stereo with Google and why I've never really considered it a true stereo speaker. Since the 17's are apparently on their way out though I'd love to see what B&O inserts into its "most affordable stereo speaker" price bracket.

Beolab 17 is good but balance has a better bass and a better overall sound image if you do not play too loud. As a singel balance.

Beovision 7-55 MK1 red, Beolab 10 red. Beolab 50, all black. Beolab 17 broken ice. Beolab transmitter. Apple tv4 and apple express 2.

But wouldn't it be great if they got rid of all the "social" guff in these units, put a couple of powerlink sockets (and dare say I, a SPDIF port) and call them Beolab 30?

De facto heir/replacement of the BL3 and BL17 and something many of us will use, rather than dither over an ocean of single-point music sources currently in the catalogue.

I absolutely agree with you. These are great sounding speakers and would be great if you could pair them and use them just like Beolabs speakers. The power, sound quality and technology is there.

The Balance’s two 5.25” bass drivers are better sounding than BL17’s single 6”? Wow, I’m surprised.

Well, IMHO, stereo pairs are a whole different league of setup, no matter how good a single standalone speaker is. Balance, BS1/2, etc. all have their place but once you start talking about stereo pairs, it’s just a different ballgame, even if you’re comparing BL17 against a single standalone with huge drivers such as Edge.

Currently: BeoLab 17, BeoLab 18, BeoSound Core, BeoPlay S8 Connection Hub, Essence Remote

Previously: BeoSound 1 non-GVA

I dont see that really matters. We have as single speaker units (excluding the P-Range)

M3, M5, BS1, BS2, Edge, A9 - plenty.

Then we have the big Beolabs:- BL90, BL50, with BL20, BL18 near to EOL I suppose in terms of tech and BL17 definitely EOL

BS Balance - evolutionary dead-end or something we have not seen yet?

I see a big gap between the Compacts and the full fat stereo range. It would seem to me to be economically reasonable to convert/make a variant of the BS Balance to be a "Beolab 30" (either with some BeoSound functionality or not), pairable to Stereo pair and intergratable to Beovisions, core etc..

Whether this is a called BL30 or a BL25 or Bert who cares?

Sw update on BS Balance.

Netradio is introduced......... for the moment no NL connection.

One can set your stations and add stations to the dots of the Balance as favorites.

Very interesting.

It looks a bit like the Netradio function on my BV11 - maybe B&O are using the same portal for the Balance.

However, it is strange that they are not using TuneIn like on the rest of the multi room speakers.

Best regards - Dyssegaard

It makes sense that Balance would outperform BL 17. Updated DSPs, drivers and I am assuming using scaled back (or even the same) technology as on the higher end products with room compensation like the BL 50s. Clearly, based on the size of the Balance it is likely limited to lower volumes. But there is no reason why 2x 5.25 inch bass drivers won't outperform a single 6 inch driver.

The BL 17 probably is better suited as a surround speaker. The BL 18, is clearly more iconic.

B&O in my life 😊:

  • Beolab 8002 + Beolab 2 + Beosound Core with Essence Remote (Office)
  • Beolab 6000 + Beolab 11 + Beosound Core with Essence Remote (Bedroom)
  • Beoplay A9 Mk2 (Living Room)
  • Beosound 1 with wireless dock (Portable)
  • Beosound Balance (Dining)
  • Beoplay H95 (Focused listening, travel)
  • Beoplay H9 (3rd gen) (retired)
  • Beoplay P6 (Portable)
  • Beotime wall clock (hallway entrance)
  • BMW X5 50i with B&O Audio Package (Commute/drive)

Yes, interesting.

They are using rhe term ‘Bang & Olufsen Radio’ - obviously/maybe not the same as TuneIn.

@Carolpa
Where did the radio stations come from?
Didn’t you have to login with the TuneIn credentials like with the other products?
Or did the app maybe already know that and added it to the Balance?

no additional login, but the first impression was TuneIn. No possibilities to login for radio stations and TuneIn nowhere to be found.

Thanks - seems to be something new then!

(They might indeed use the same ‘radio’ platform as the one used in the BV11/V1, Avant/2014)

Looking forward to learn more about this.

I think any beolab with alt would beat the 17. It’s to narrow without the alt tweeter. They are better for music, one on one.

Did B&O have their own net radio system somehow?

And, what is BS5 using? Same as V1/Avant?

TuneIn might have requirements in the future that can be difficult, also, did TuneIn not ditch bbc at some point?

But interesting.

I really hope this is either temporary on Balance, or something they will roll out on all other devices.

Would be really strange to have a different "radio" service on different devices in your home.....

That is another thing that bugs me with it.

I was testing UPnP/DLNA streams in my Netlink and discovered something interesting.

The Beosound Balance accepts already streams from Foobar 2000.

So the future in the making (?).

So it’s a DLNA renderer. You should then be able to control a DLNA stream against the Balance from the B&O App don’t you?

BS Moment, BS Core, BG 4002, BC 4500, BS1, BL18, BL19, BL8000 + RCV1, A6, M5, M3, A1, P6 (tks Botty), H5, TR1

White Shark doesn't show all appropiate info, so not completely! Still it isn't recognized bij the app, nore in the BLGW.

But I can play Spotify Connect to the BS Balance. Note: it is no Chromecast. This I have switched off on my Balance.

This is shown if Airplay is used. There is quite a sound difference between the two!

There should be....since you use 2 different Sound Modes of the device.

Or?

(What does the Sound Mode ‘BG6000’ mean, by the way.....looks like ‘Omni Mode’)

Hey There,

Did you manage to solve the issue with Balance/Optical Audio cable from your TV?

Hello! I would be very interested in getting opinions on the difference in sound quality between the same Apple lossless file played on the BsBalance via AirPlay from an Apple device, and played via Chromecast from an Android device (Bubble UPnP app).

I assume in both cases the perceived quality should be better than the same song played from Spotify Connect, that is compressed...

Has anybody switched the loudness setting on? I am missing a bit of bass energy from the Balance and this setting seems to me to give "some more excitement"... however, for serious classical music listening I normally prefer to not touch any sound setting from the original/flat one. I am realizing I spend at the moment more time on hectic playing with settings than enjoying music.

Does an A9 MK4 give in general a better sound experience (not just louder)? I would like to compare them and choose just the preferred one, in particular for listening to classical music.

Thank you very much in advance for any opinion and recommendation.

The loudness setting is mainly operating at lower levels, to keep the timbral balance mimicking the way our hearing works. If a speaker plays, let's say 1kHz @ 60dBSPL, in order to hear lowerfrequencies perceptually as loud, let's say at 20Hz you need to play much louder, i.e, +30dB. This is not perfectly linear + depends on level throughout. B&O Loudness doesn't 'add' per se EQ as some old radios in a way that alters the music content, but aims to keep the perceptual experience similar at any level, so in fact you don't 'hear' a problem in your music. Neither adding or removing.

If you aim to 'hear' the differences on loudness, set a bassy track, and flip the toggle on and off, whilst playing let's say at 20-30% volume. Above 50% the effect should be minimal if any. For that size of a product (also A9) I would suggest to keep loudness on + run room compensation at the speaker's location.

It is always good having posts here from you guys adding your knowledge for a better understanding of how things works and how they work in the B&O devices.

Hello everybody- bought a Balance just a few days back and it just won’t connect to my WLAN for whatever reason.
i am having Alexa and I thinking of steering my (non google voice command) balance through Alexa.
the update should be long out, right?
can’t find anything besides “later” after launch being available.

does anyone know how to connect Alexa?

also can anyone help with WLAN connection issues - is this a known bug?
many thanks, Stefan

I have a Balance connected to a Google Wifi (mesh) network and none of my B&O devices have any issues connecting. However, in my office wifi, neither my B&O M5 or Apple HomePod will connect. I believe it has to do with the wifi security settings. A workaround that worked for a while for me was to connect the wired connection in my office to a Google wifi router and have my devices connect though the new router - but office shut that down too recently 🤦‍♂️ so your issue could be related to the router settings...

All my Chromecast enabled devices are working fine, my BS2 as well.

In my Fritzbox and Asus router settings I have enabled "multicast", also "igmp snooping" and "upnp". Also have changed DNS servers to Google DNS  8.8.8.8 - maybe this helps?

On my Google WiFi, the DNS is also set to 8.8.8.8 like you. The other settings are not there. I am using standard out of the box with ip6 on. Have you tried factory resetting the Balance?

Level and Emerge do support both BR One and Essence Remote. The support pages of the Balance don't have any info on remotes. I guess you'll have to call your dealer...
