Less and less topics and posts here on the new forum. Why is that? I think I know!

-No immediate replies or interests on questions like "contribution payment"

-Old forum has no search function and even Google replies with "Post not found"

-New forum is not user friendly

Sorry about these neg remarks but in another thread I said I was happy with this new setup but I'm not!

I disagree - I think there are a fair number of replies - the last time we changed the forum, all the old threads simply disappeared so the fact we have saved all the old threads is a huge bonus. The lack of a search facility is unfortunate but maybe we can do something about key threads. I must confess to rarely looking at old threads - the same questions are asked repeatedly and I tend to try to answer as required. When the forum was in its infancy, I actually answered all threads within 24 hours if they had not received an answer. These days, that is simply not necessary due to the number of helpful members on site.

I am these days less interested in the newer equipment so leave most answers to others but do attempt to keep my hand in as I do have access to various sources of information.

The fact that the old forum threads have not been migrated is a huge loss. I do not understand this decision. This was a big surprise to me. I didn't see the forum as a "social" thing, just to chat when I am bored, but more as a source of knowledge. Now that knowledge accumulated over 5 years has gone.

I must say that when looking through the old forum, i much prefer the simpler format/font. I know people don't readily accept the new, but i can't personally see the improvement. How about the new forum, but in the old forum format button?Travel

So what's happened??

We were told that the old threads would be searcheable and now it is ..........unfortunate!?

Come on down chaps, this is 2012 and just about anything is possible, especially when BeoWorld is paying for the software.

What went wrong and can it be fixed?? Downloading selected threads is a very poor compromise and smells like a *** up!!

I think the "organ grinder" needs to input to this thread as some of the "natives" are revolting!

The forum had to be updated - most people with relatively large post counts found that posting was almost impossible. This was affecting more and more people. To update, we needed new software and this did not allow migration of the old forum. Unlike previous upgrades, we have managed to keep the old forum as an archive so that old threads are still available. I agree the lack of a search facility is a grievance but this is outweighed by having a usable forum. We cannot use the old forum software as it is no longer supported as a new package - I am obviously in a minority but don't really notice the difference - I just read the posts.

Ps I am the monkey, not the organ grinder!

Peter, the announcement was that the old forum would be searchable. Sorry but this is a MAJOR flaw.  So now 10 persons can post easily, but all the others are irrelevant. Nice

Hi,

There is something I don't understand.

Sometimes the first post in a thread offers the email me option, which works (but which is not automatically selected when we post, a nuisance to me), and sometimes there is a follow this thread option, which doesn't work at all - no emails when there's a new post!

What have I missed?

And as Keith states. I like to speak with data. Here is a copy-paste of Keith's announcement on the old forum:

As previously announced by Lee we will be launching the new Beoworld Forum on 1st March 2012.

Whilst we had considered changing the domain address on switchover, in the end for many reasons we decided to leave it athttp://forum.beoworld.org meaning that you will not need to change your bookmarks etc. in your browser.

The new Forum now has the same "Look & Feel" as the Beoworld web site along with several new features. One useful feature added to most forums is the ability for a thread starter to define if it is a "Question" or "Discussion". If a question is defined and a subsequent accepted answer is provided, then that answer is automatically placed next to the question meaning you don't need to search the whole thread for an answer.

There is also a "Technical Wiki" where Gold members can add detailed technical articles which can be added too by others and or commented on. I will be adding all the current data found in Beotech updated in the Wiki section. Also, software status, PUC, STB-C and much more will be added in the Wiki.

The changeover process will be as follows:-

  1. After the Prize Draw on the last day of February, I will be changing over the DNS settings to our new server. As this process changes all the DNS servers around the world, it will take up to 24 hours for them all to be updated. Most will be updated in Europe within a few hours.
  2. Subsequent to the changeover, I will be making THIS forum "Read Only" and it will become the "Archived" forum athttp://archived.beoworld.org/forums
  3. The archived forum will show everything up to the last day of February by the 2nd March.

On the Forums HOME page of the new forum there are hyperlinks to all the archived forums and you will be able to still search the forums as you can today. You can also link a new thread to any archived thread/posts from the new forum.

If you are logged into your account there is no need to log out and login again to access the new forum, but the very first time you go to the new forum it will auto register you and show that you have joined if you view the HOME page. The most important first task is to update your "Profile" by clicking the "Edit your Profile" at the top of the page. Note that your posts count will start at zero. Those members who wish to keep their post count from the old forum should send me a PM AFTER 1st March on the new forum and I will manually update it.

If there are any questions at all about the changeover, then please post them here..

Regards Keith....

Peter, thanks for your "party line" answer to my post.

However, I am no longer a moderator so have no need to stick to the "party line".

Why did we choose a software update that was not compatible with searching the old forum data??

Where is the organ grinder when the bullets are flying??

Dear Beoworld Members, PLEASE calm down..

Firstly, let me apologies for the search facility on the archive forum not working, which is NOW fixed.

May I point out that as well as myself, not one of the 44 beta testers noted that the search function was not working either!!! Had it been noted it would have been fixed during the Beta period when I was available to deal with such issues.

ALL post data, images and file attachments in the old forums are available to search and read including your old PM's which you CAN reply to on the archived forum. The only reason that this data is not available in the new forum is because the two SQL databases are not compatible.

Whilst, I am very happy to receive constructive and non emotional feedback, it should be remembered that I am not sitting at my PC 24 hours a day waiting, just in case. This week has been a very busy business week for me and today has really been the first time I could sit down and focus on outstanding issues.

Thank you Keith.

I HAD noticed it, but I didn't want to be a pain. You had so much to do.

To be fixed then:

Google search to the old forum (but I know you're on it),

Those horrid emoticons!

I can confirm that the emoticons will be made as on the old forum in the coming days

I can also confirm that I am using the Google webmaster tools to re-index both the archived forum and the current new forum, but these changes take up to three weeks to complete on the Google servers.

Your feedback was all that needed here. Thanks for all the effort so far an fixing something that is so essential. Trying to be constructive this time, please change the Green and Yellow buttons of the website theme. These are real spoilers and do not compliment the new theme of the forum in my opinion.

I have to confess to finding that remark objectionable. The forum was updated mainly because it was becoming increasingly impossible to use. To suggest it was changed to suit 10 people at the expense of other members seems unworthy of a gentleman. I am delighted that Keith has restored the search facility for those that need it - as stated before, I can only thank Keith for the huge amount of work he has put into the site. I think the verified answers are useful as they can highlight a correct answer easily. I do wonder possibly about the verification method but am happy to leave it be.

Regarding the validation method, I am surprised it is possible to mark a post directly as verified. The logic would be that a member marks a post as suggested answer, and another member verifies it. So two members would have to agree in order to mark a post as answered.

Just an idea, but I do not know if this is technically possible.

Just noticed this myself - I had the impression that the original idea would be that the OP would verify the answer / suggestion when he had tried it in practice - wondered if it was my mod powers that allowed me to do it directly.

Anyway, as it is now, it can be described as "peer review" which in itself is an acknowledged scientific method Big Smile

Anyone can also dispute the answers, but I guess when that starts to happen, it will be better to just continue the discussion until people agree on the answer...

Many thanks for fixing the search, Keith.

I would agree and that was the intention as defined in the spec for the software.

Right now I have set the permissions so that any status level can mark a post as the answer and if an answer is marked as the answer, it can also be unmarked by anyone.

The only options I have available without writing code are to limit by status level who can mark an answer.

I would suggest that the statement was not designed to be objectionable.

You and I, Peter and a few others, were indeed finding the forum impossible to use. Those less prolific posters than our very small minority, scarcely noticed, apart from the fact that the answers to queries and questions were slower to appear or worse, did not appear at all!

The ability to search the old forum, now fixed by Keith, is probably used most  by those very members who did not notice the problems that you and I were having. Hence their anger at the apparent loss.

In the event, Keith has fixed the problem, like he has fixed all the others and I thank him.

As stated also in another thread, the 10 persons that were not be able to post, are the biggest contributors of this forum and thanks to them we ask and we learn. But not having a search on the old forum, is (was until Keith fixed it) is a headache to the rest of us. A gentleman like you Peter, could have looked also outside your small club to us B&O mortals...

And as Beoice, suggested, why didn't you reset those post counts and make your lives simpler?  Would not spoil your "divinity" at least to my eyes...

Because the post count, as shown to the users of the forum, is just a number and means zilch technically. It was the mere existence of the old posts that caused the problem.

Just as Peter said somewhere else earlier, I personally would've been quite happy if everybody would've just started from 0, including myself.

Regarding divinity, I don't deserve the "f" - please drop me to my regular gold status, I was going to do it myself but stopped to think that I might kick myself out completely, or something...

***
Likewise with the layout - if keeping the old layout would've actually been simpler (or even possible), I'm sure it would've been the #1 choice for everybody!

I had asked my count to be set to 0 - but was informed that this meant effectively deleting all my posts - again something that I would not have minded. This was felt however not to be sensible. I find your whole tone frankly insulting - I have been here a long time and indeed was the first moderator. For many years I partially bankrolled the site but did so behind the scenes, but at no point have held myself up as anything other than a member. There were not just 10 members who were having problems - some members have left due to this issue and this is why others decided to change the system. Gradually the problem would have affected the whole forum so that it would have ceased to function at all - is this what you would have wanted?

I did for a while post under another name to get round the issue but that started to give issues as well.It would seem the huge problem you have complained about has been quickly fixed - the decision to change the forum was taken only after 2 years of problems for some of us.
