Dear members,

sorry, I'm still trying to get 5.1 sound on my Avant RF CRT. Doesn't seem to work. I'm trying to rule out errors. So: which type of module is it that I do have in my Avant? Is it capable of 5.1?

Kai

Hi Kai,

certainly it can - if the module hadn't been taken out or disabled.

I see, that you have already plugged in cables for front/rear - probably you are daisychaining from one speaker to another.

Can you manually choose 'Sound 5'?

Which are your options in the sound menu?

Maybe post a pic of that as well.

Please note - when you have connected a player (DVD player or something using the coax digital-in along with the scart) - that it will only decode DD.

Do you have the coax digital connected?

The module is also for upmixing of stereo to 5.1 using Dolby Prologic.

There is a tv - and there is a BV.

Thanks MM,

yes, I'm daisy chaining speakers. And I can choose speaker 5. And all I get is pro logic.

I think, I've found the answer in a different thread. Apparently, older versions of the module can't decode DTS and need a software update. This will probably be the case with my version, too... Anybody, who has the needed chips available?

I did write that above!!!  ;-)

A chip alone probably won't do it (if you can get hold on it) - an update of the sw might be necsessary too.

Why not just choose the DD soundtrack from the source when playing?

What do you (want to) have connected?

Because many DVDs only carry DTS and not DD? Isn't that the case? I have only connected the DVD2 so far...

Kai,

The quoted spec for your AVANT is:-

Dolby® Digital Decoder :
Decoding capabilities Dolby® Digital 5.1 channel decoding
Dolby® Pro-Logic decoding of two channel Dolby® Digital
Dolby® Pro-Logic decoding of two channel PCM
Dolby® Pro-Logic decoding of two analogue channels (Lt/Rt)
Automatic format detection(Dolby® Digital, PCM)
Calibration 3 channel Tone control & loudness (L/C/R)
Bass management, Delay management

Sound modes (Speaker 1 - 5)
Speaker 1 : Stereo internal speakers(Subwoofer muted)
Speaker 2 2.0/2.1 : Stereo external speakers / Stereo external speakers + Subwoofer
Speaker 3 3.0/3.1 : Dolby®-3 stereo / Dolby®-3 stereo + Subwoofer
Speaker 4 4.0/4.1 : Stereo-4 / Stereo-4 + Subwoofer
Speaker 5 5.0/5.1 : Dolby® Digital or Dolby® Pro-Logic Surround / Dolby® Digital + Subwoofer

However, I am aware that the spec was changed with a software update to AC3 which I think removed PCM and added DTS

Regards Keith....

The software versions required are:-

  • AC3 Software needs to be version 2.3 and
  • TV Software needs to be at least 8.3, the final release version was 10.2 for your model

Thanks very much, Keith. One last question: my Avant is V.Tape. 8.3 and above will be for the DVD Avant. Which downsides will swapping softwares on my Avant have? It won't probably solely affect the Surround Sound capability...

Kai

I have looked back at my notes about the software revisions and without question up to TV software Version 10.2 it is fully backwards compatible with all of the following Avant RF based products, and can as such be used freely in any of them:-

  • BeoVision 3-32 MK I, MK II (type 880X)
  • Avant 28 RF (type 833X)
  • Avant 32 RF MK I and MK II (type 843X)
  • Avant RF CTV (type 837X)
  • Avant 28 DVD (type 834X)
  • Avant 32 DVD MK I and MK II (type 844X and 845X)
  • BeoVision 5 (type 890X)

So, I don't actually see any downside and in your AVANT you can go up to version 10.2 because up to this version all AVANT's had the same TV software..
