Hi

I have two Beomaster 5500 receivers. Hardware wise, they should both be identical but in some aspects they are not. I am hoping that someone will have more information.

First Beomaster 5500 is of type 2329 and the s/n is 3371006. This one is in a better cosmetical state.

Second Beomaster 5500 is type 2331 and the s/n is 04665679. This version also has two stickers at the back that type 2329 does not. One sticker says BEOLINK and the other sticker is S/W 2.3.

The only difference (somewhat an annoying one) is the fact that 2329 cannot be option programmed. Type 2331 normally responds to these commands.

Does anyone have any information about the 2329 type? This type is not listed on the Beomaster 5500 product page and I assume it is some kind of early version of the Beomaster 550. I also assume that the only difference is in the firmware version.

Does anyone have any experience with upgrading the firmware?

I know it's somewhat risky, but would it be possible to swap the microchips between the two Beomasters?

You could swap the casing. It is just some screws on the back, and you slide it off.

The front is also easy to change.

I believe that the type 2329 is a Beomaster 5000 so you may want to remove the cabinets and see what's inside each. Someone may have modified a BM5000 chassis to look like a BM5500?

You are right, I checked BM5000 product page and it is indeed of type 2329.

However, I am quite certain that the internal components are from BM5500 since I am able to control it with my Master Control Panel 5500 and with Beo4 remote control. If it were a BM5000, I wouldn't be able to control it with those two remotes.

I tried replacing the front plates on the two BMs but it wasn't that trivial. Perhaps I could give it another go.

Sounds like a Beomaster 5500 with a Beomaster 5000 top cover.
Check for the small screw holding the rear part just inside the socket bay. Not present on Beomaster 5000 covers.

Okay, this hasn' occurred to me that the top cover could be from BM5000. I'll have to check the cover to confirm this.

In any case, any ideas why I can't do option programming on the frankenstein BM5500? I sort of want that the receiver goes to AUX when I press TV or DVD button on my Beo4. This  functionality works on the BM5500, but not on the other ...

@Dillen, quick question. The service manual for 5500 on Beoworld is only a schematic and there's no additional information in the PDF. Is it safe to use BM6500 service manual as a guidance to replace the front plate on the BM5500?

You need to put it in A.OPT 2.

To do this:

Turn to standby/off.

On the Beo4, press the POWER button and LIST together.  Then press LIST until OPTION is shown, press GO (centre button), and then press LIST to show A.OPT.  Then press 2.

Pressing TV or DVD should now put the BM5500 to AUX.

@Guy, thanks for this. I am familiar with how to do option programming. The problem is that one BM5500 can be option programmed. When executing the sequence, I get the response on the display saying "o2" once I put it to OPTION 2. The other BM5500 does not respond to that sequence, I get no feedback on the display that the option was accepted. All I see that when I press 2 on Beo4, the LED on the BM5500 front plate blinks that some sort of signal was received. But no confirmation in the form of "o2" on the other BM5500. I also tried to do option programming with Beolink 1000 and the results are the same.

^ Understood.

There's a thread on the old forum about software versions for BM5500s.  It would suggest that one of yours has been updated and the other not.

The thread is here: https://archivedforum.beoworld.org/forums/p/29945/237804.aspx#237804

So the verdict here is that the earlier versions of Beomaster do not support option programming? Does this mean that early version 5500s don't have MCL support?

An example from the cobweb manuals:

"

ONE ROOM

Beosystem 5500, 9000

Beovision MX 3000, 4500, 5000

To obtain A/V integration (read: option setting!) between these products, the audio

master must be equipped with Beolink software, part No. 8341051

(Beomaster 5500) or 8341052 (Beocenter 9000). If the audio

master is equipped with Beolink software, this is indicated by a

sticker marked BEOLINK on the rear panel."

Thanks Dillen for this info. This sort of clears it up.

Any chance you have a service manual for BM5500 lying around somewhere?

Only in danish and not in electronic form.

It's not mentioned in the servicemanual anyways.
