I'm considering buying a used Beosystem 3 (US market), and the local stores and installers have all closed. Any thoughts or experience on whether this is a sensible thing to do? (it'd be a direct replacement for a failed unit)

My first concern is PUCs. I imagine I may need to send it off somewhere to get any missing PUCs installed (Sanyo projector, for example), and get latest firmware while I'm at it.

Secondly, assuming PUCs are in place, is it naive to expect to hook it up, then only have to do some light configuring to get it working? I vaguely remember my original installer having trouble setting things up years ago (or maybe it was just the Beo5 that I bought shortly afterwards).

Hey Paul,

Just gone through a similar experience replacing a Mk1 with a Mk3 Beosystem in my BV9.

The hardest thing I found was getting into it, to swap over the motorised stand cable (this is done by removing the feet and sliding the top and bottom panels off).  It was definitely worth the pain. The MK3 unit is a much improved model.

I suppose your level of pain will be if you are replacing a like for like or upgrading to a later model?

It's be a like-for-like replacement. Did you need PUC updates and how did you have that done?

I recommend you buy a used one from one the two B&O dealers that take trade-ins and resell, with some level of support. They can then program it for you with the right PUCs. They also may offer a limited warranty. B&O Boston/Oliver Pennington, and B&O Mainline in Pennsylvania/Scott Gensler are who I recommend. I bought my used BS3 Mk 1 from Oliver a couple years back and it had a software problem with sound settings. He replaced it with a later model no charge and it works great in my home theater system. I'm in Colorado and also fresh out of B&O dealers. He also installed the PUCs.
