Hello!

New to the forum but a long time reader! I'm sorry if this has been talked about before, but I couldn't find something when searching for it.

The take up reel of my Beosound Century cassette deck is not operating.  Both Capstans will spin but when i put a tape in and try to play it, the tape gets tangled in the roller on the right side, thus eating the tape.  I have replaced the belt, which didn't work, so I then replaced the entire cassette deck and that still didn't work.  I've cleaned the rollers, head, and capstans. Am I missing something? Is there a 2nd or 3rd belt I'm unaware of.  Could there be a sensor or something not working?

Im not entirely capable to doing in depth repairs, but I can do minor things.  Everything I see online shows minor issues, but it doesn't seem to solve my problem.

Thanks so much for any help!!

Joel

Hi,

I think what's happened is that the small plastic gear that provides drive to the take-up wheels has disintegrated and therefore isn't able to engage, it just flops around.  My thinking is that the force exerted on the gear when the auto reverse function changes direction causes it to wear out over time.  I think this is a common problem with these plastic units.  I don't think you can fix it for two reasons, 1) in order to get to the gear you have to disassemble nearly the entire unit and other plastic parts will break, and 2) you'll never find the part.

I would suggest trying to find a working cassette and swap it out.

Good luck

Bill

Biil, thank you!

I think you must be right, because I noticed when it broke, and if I can remember right, it was when the auto reverse function engaged.  Would this also effect fast forward and rewind?

I will try another cassette deck, what a coincidence that its the same problem with the original and then my replacement one.

Thank you so so much!

If anyone has, or knows of where I can get one, I would love to a buy a replacement cassette for the Beosound Century/2000.

Hi,

It won't impact FF or RW, only play.  Sadly, the cassette is hard to find. On the other hand, you can use any stand alone cassette via the aux input to keep your Century going. My personal opinion is that it is a truly great sounding unit worthy of keeping even if the cassette is dead.

OK good to know.

Oh yeah this thing will be kicking regardless of the cassette. Its an amazing player, love the design and sound and everything, i just can't stand having it in the back of my mind, knowing its not the way its supposed to be and was meant to be.  It's something I will constantly be trying to repair.  I don't know how many times i've opened it up/cleaned/adjusted it hoping it will magically work one day.

There is a repair shop near my house that I plan to take it to if I can't find another cassette deck.

Thanks Bill
