I saw the Halo at my dealer on Saturday, and although I was already intrigued since the first leaked video it didn’t disappoint at all, knowing that some people do not like it.

I would have a very limited use-case for my BS1, as my other B&O products are too old, but I still want to have one. That it is a great achievement.

There is probably no good rationale explanation why one would spend ca 700$ on a volume remote control. I am now having tough discussions with the FS (wife), as she states ‘you buy Halo I say Hejdå (goodbye) Big Smile

And then my dealer came up with the great idea that I need a Core as well for my BS9000 😀

I love his enthusiasm.

“I have to work on my core” I tell my wife in return Smile

To be continued, and please do see the Halo IRL it is amazingly cool.

Which is why I have cut out any B&O control from my music / radio listening - only the speakers remain.

Roon is my control interface - if I must use an iDevice, then at least Roon's interface and software work extremely well - and at times the Linn app(s) too, as I have a Linn streamer / DAC in my main room. The Linn app even shows me a lot of my podcast feeds from TuneIn!

Yes, Roon and a Linn streamer is expensive, but newsflash, so is B&O.

The Halo's design / form factor limits how useful I can ever get.  The screen is too small for searching / browsing in the end. Which implies it was only ever going to be a volume control and starter for predefined experiences. Fine for those who are happy with just that. But with the Moment gone, they're telling you to use your phone / tablet for everything else. In which case, if I am generally constantly having to use my iPad for example, what use is a 700 pound / euro volume dial?

Severed_Hand_of_Skywalker:

The Moment was proof that B&O has no Clue when it comes to software and is why I am so scared to buy a halo now with the "promise" that it will be more useful in the future. They couldn't even get the Moment to work with base features after 2 years of trying.

The Balance is not a NL product as such, it has no music service such as Deezer, TuneIn or DLNA, it is "just" a BT,CC,AP2 and Spotify speaker.

Maybe all or some of the current NL products + Balance will be updated one day to share the same new platform, and the Halo will be able to control all.

This is not true. The Balance has Spotify and TuneIn integrated, but it can (at the moment) only be controlled via voice command and not by the app...

My dealer told me that the HALO update will be available beginning of 2021

The Balance only has Spotify/TuneIn because it is GA.

Not updating the Balance would be kind of stupid, now that they just released a pure NL-controller.

Tunein via Chromecast correct? Like any Chromecast aware app. You can ask to play Deezer on the Balance too via CC which does not mean that Deezer is an integrated music service within the Balance like it is in most of all the other NL products.

Totally agree. Perplexing. If I'd just bought a Balance to work alongside my Edge, BeoSound 2 and Stage, I'd be pretty perplexed if I went and bought the Halo and it didn't support the latest speaker.

Waiting on SandyB's report with bated breath. It will make or break my Halo purchase.

I think there is some sort of licensing problem for Spotify streaming that prevents it from working with NL (old devices can do that)

Many recent products lost the Spotify Direct Integration and at least on my part I want that since I can play music without bugging down my phone or ipad.

When I looked for a new speaker some time back I complained about that since Spotify and Apple Music are the leading services and the Spotify Direct was working really well for me.

So I think the Balance was their answer for that problem with its limitations.

Cheers

JK

For about half the price I get an iPad mini with a processor probably thousands times faster than this choppy device that seemingly has cut corners everywhere except for its halo

It now makes so much more sense to think of the Moment as a knowing Sith collaborator!

I find it quite bizarre that the Halo will not support the products the App does. Yes I realise it's a start, however (as beojeff) as a BS Moment Adopter it makes me nervous that they didn't have a base functionality launch with at least the current NL and new non-NL products. Basically anything in the current App should be supported by Halo. Yes I know they've killed NL, but the way they're releasing products half complete, and then not completing them is rather worrying. Also the whole premise of B&O, keeping it and adding to your collection, is rapidly going down the toilet bowl. Again I understand this from the throw it out and buy new every couple of years, but really? I need to start buying Lotto tickets to adopt that approach. Stick out tongue

Ok I’ve just played with it a bit at my local dealer

It’s pretty smooth , responsive and didn’t lag. Better than I expected, which was good

It’s also very attractive - definitely a very nice to have product

Didn’t try out it’s full functionality, but it does seem a bit limited. What usage do you really get if you are a Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music user?

DLNA music?

Browsing?

More of an experience starter.

Form factor should have been a touch bigger, and used a different and larger screen to facilitate some browsing

I’m sure it will suit some setups where Deezer is used. Otherwise seems hard to justify

Having just Mikipedia’s video, what jumped out was how the Halo took design from the Beosound Edge. As if they were designed for each other.

Within NL you can redirect a Spotify Connect stream to any B&O product, that supports Spotify Connect*

I do that everyday from my Essence MK2 to my Avant MK1/V1 tv’s.

The first product without support for Spotify Connect was the M3.

There are hundreds of devices with support for Spotify Connect out there.....it can’t really be a license issue - the M5 has the support...

The ‘official’ explanation at that time was: people are using AP and CC for playing from whatever service they prepfer.

Thus, no need for the Connect support in the M3.

In the last couple of years AP(2) and CC has been the preference in Struer for multiroom.....in order to give people the freedom of choosing their music service. Untill now.

Now (with the Halo controller) we all need to use NL for multiroom, which is different.

Neither one way or the other there is need for ditching Spotify Connect - so why do it?

However, it seems a bit a hit or miss whether you get Spotify Connect inplementation in the newer devices or not - the Stage has Spotify Connect support, the Balance hasn’t.

Personally I would wish for a bit more continuity in the RD of the devices.

Telling me I best use AP(2)/CC (and certainly not Spotify Connect) one day and the next - if I want to benefit from a brandnew remote - I must rely on the NL-integrated Deezer for music, is not my cup of tea.

I need some explanation - who has the explanation, if there is any!

*The limitation using Spotify Connect and B&O multiroom however, is that you can not have multiple devices play the stream....like you can with Deezer.
