I just received a Beocord 4500 from the Netherlands, I have a voltage converter and with it, all the lamps function, the cassette appears to play, fast forward, and reverse.

However the lid does not open. The kind gentleman who gave me this Beocord gratis sent me a video of the door opening and closing, so I know it worked in Holland.

I can hear the motor whirring away, but the door doesn't move.

The schematic is all about electronics so any help in what to look for with a mechanical problem would really be appreciated.

Thanks.

Jeff

Hi Jeff, Did you ever find a solution to this problem (BeoCord4500 door not opening)? I have the same problem and am also looking for some guidance. Thanks, Robert.

Motor whirring but no lid movement - I'd say the belt has broken.

Hi Dillen, I think you are correct about the broken belt(s). Can anyone point me in the direction of guidance for how to remove the lid to access the belts? Thanks in advance!

For future reference, should anyone else need to repair the door drive on a Beocord4500, here are the steps to replacing the drive belt:

1. Open lid (manually, if necessary) by gently forcing it open. Do this firmly, but gently, allowing the reduction gearing to spin the motor.

2. To access the internals, remove the top covers by referring to the guidance on the bottom of the unit: remove lid by inserting a small lever into the tiny slots above where the arms slide into the cover; then, slide the cover up-and-off. Remove the glass control panel by insert a small rod into the hole under the front edge of the unit (about six inches from the right edge) to release a small locking pin. Slide the cover to the left, allowing it to lift off. Note that the glass is likely to separate from the plastic surround edging and will need to be reattached. (I masked off the central area and used an industrial spray adhesive on the back of the glass, which worked well.) The plastic cover will now slide off the cover control arms, exposing the guts of the unit.

3. The door drive assembly (a motor with a belt drive to a gear assembly) is located in the right rear corner of the unit. Confirm that the belt is broken. This assembly can be removed as a unit by removing three small screws, two Torx and a single Philips.remove the assembly as a unit. The electricals can be left connected.

4. Locate and remove the broken drive belt and find a suitable replacement. A rubber o-ring or even a heavy-duty rubber band of appropriate size seems to work, though it will likely be a temporary fix. The B&O replacement, if found, would be ideal.

5. To replace the belt, the gear assembly will need to be partly disassembled. (Take numerous pictures before doing this, in case your disassembly gets a bit overzealous.) Two screws need to be removed in order to be able to gently pry apart the drive unit to disengage the shaft enough to slip the new o-ring over it and onto the large driven pulley. Once the o-ring is replaced, reassemble the drive unit with the two small screws. With a small hooked pick, pull the o-ring over the small drive pulley, being careful not to damage the o-ring.

6. Replacement is the opposite of disassembly.

Good luck!
