@BeoGreg

The BeoSound Moment is designed in Denmark and made in Czech.

It is written on the etiquette under the basis station.

Electronic components should come naturally from China.

Does someone have an idea about how the Moment indexes and maintain indexes of tracks accessible through DLNA and what could be the limit of tracks it can manage while preserving fluidity in searching, browsing or mood selecting?

my library (2400 albums) sits on a Synology NAS and it usually takes some time to iTunes or other product to fully build a complete view of it including displaying covers

(maybe too early for this question)

BS Moment, BS Core, BG 4002, BC 4500, BS1, BL18, BL19, BL8000 + RCV1, A6, M5, M3, A1, P6 (tks Botty), H5, TR1

Hiort:

elephant:
Thanks Flere for the great pix

Love how wood of tablet blends with the table

Now all I need are mahogany and/or pine as optional finishes - or oak ?

Does any one know what wood is being used ?

The finish on the Moment is oak tree (from Denmark)

Since there's only one circular controller on the wood maybe it should be nicknamed Odin?

BeoGreg:

I just copied the exact words writen by B&O on their stickers since a few years (since the opening of the CZ factory I believe).

"Country of origin : ?".

I still care about that little sticker even if I know that the majority of the components of a "country of origin : denmark" product is china.

I haven't changed since I'm on B&O forums, I wanted to know on the "list bot forum" in year 2000 and I whant to know on this board.

It's important for some of us and it shouldn't start the endless discussion about denmark vs china products...

As always it would be the first think I will check at my dealer when the Moment arrives.

Maybe it has to be wriiten this way for some reason, when a product is assembled in a certain country - independent from where the components/the concept are/is coming.

I don't know?

Of course I respect your 'care for' which country is on the sticker - why shouldn't I.

To me the origin of the components and the idea/design of a product is far more significant.

Now you know, that the Czech Rep is on the sticker.

Does that change your attitude against/your thoughts on the BS Moment?

Finally, the user interface. I like some of the subtleties, like the mood wheel. But I think that many users will find that there are a LOT of gestures to remember on the touch screen, and when one is on a particular screen, the gestures are modal, therefore, users will have to remember that the same gestures may have different outcomes depending on the screen they're on. I would have loved to see persistent icons for functions across the UI, maybe this is an option. Instead of trying to remember how to use the device, the option of tappable buttons might reduce an incorrect gesture, and make for a better user experience.

The concept is very good, unifying sound sources across the board. The execution, to me, leaves a lot to be desired.

Love the device build and the old style B&O style touches, the sensual wood volume wheel and the entire feel  and sound quality (of course) of the device.

As for the user inferface and music browsing experience, UTTER RUBBISH! (by modern day standards)

Flere:
Here are the four pictures I took.

Flere's pictures are better than the official B&O publicity photographs, and they have changed my mind about the base looking something like a brick!

Also, the rear face with the cable sock entry actually looks much better than the B&O launch video where the rear cable connection looked like a botched job.

So, now the question for me is what is it's real performance like (and is it really any better than the Olive One for storing and distributing sound)?

I'm pretty happy with my current approach using my iPad and PC and Playmaker for storing and accessing sound, but have to admit the unification of sources and the Mood Wheel and such of the Moment are very tempting to me. There are glitches and things that aren't perfect about my approach, for example my iPad Remote app seldom seems do download all the cover art from the PC running iTunes, and has its share of hiccups requiring rebooting and such.

When/if my BS9000 goes tango uniform and isn't repairable may well be the Moment for me. The Moment is less than I paid for my BS9000 in 97.

Though I like the new Moment, I would like to see more CD covers in one view, looking at the tablet screen. if one has a extensive music library, and I think a lot of us have, you will want to have a better overview of it on screen, like iTunes offers on your mac/iPad. I presume something like that would be possible by means of a software modification. I just can't see how you will have a overview just by swiping the CD covers from right to left, if you have, say, hundreds of CD's.

What is actually the maximum distance from the tablet to the base to keep it work? With the upcoming multiroom functionaliy it would be nice to take the tablet somewhere with you in the house. Or should this be done with the beomusic or beoremote apps?

The Jukebox is for operating the SoundHeart. To the question on 'distance' see the new 'Moment unboxing thread'.

If you need to/want to listen to the music already playing from the Moment on a NL device, you just have to use the 'Join' function via remote or with direct access on the NL device depending on which device.

For operating the devices in the 'multi-room' mode, you will have to use the BeoMusic app.

NOTE: we still know too little to say exactly how the 'multi-room' function will behave and how to control the sources.

They are working on that in Struer - doing software testing etc.

We will have to wait a couple of months to get 'the whole picture'.

Not so much tasteless.

What is tasteless is accepting no answers from authority or organisation which are or should be held accountable.

Tasteless is saying we should not discuss or challenge for fear of being impolite.

I've just spent half an hour using it.

Physically it is a very nice device. The screen isn't up to modern standards in my opinion, but as an interface perfectly acceptable. I've used my iPhone and ipad for days without needing to clear off fingerprints. 5 minutes with the Moment and it was covered in smears.

There are 3 main pages to navigate through. What your currently playing(but no screen art paused etc) The mood wheel(very easy to use) and the main home page.

On top of the page you can select Artist/Radio/Playland. If you select artist, you have to scroll through every single one from A-Z till you get there, which will literally take minutes. There isn't a search function!!!!

The Killer for me was that I was shown the Beomusic app, and it was an immeasurably better interface in every conseivable way. It would scare me that if i buy it, I would then never pick up the device every again add is always use the abundance of ipad that litter or house.

To fast forward a song you swipe the wood to the......left. Every audio device I've ever owned had fast forward to the right. Am I wrong Confused

Anyway its Mk1 and I'm sure things will constantly get better. Yes - thumbs up

If you tap twice on 'Artist', you get the alphabet and can pick the right letter in order to go faster to the artist of your choice.

No further search function there - at least not in the current sw version.

'forward/swipe' - when I turn a page in a book to get to the next one, I do it with a movement from right to the left. Never found that awkward!

When you 'scroll' under Artist to get to the next one, you also make a movement from right to the left with your hand.

I don't know - maybe we just have to get used to it.

Can someone confirm this point :

Can you also listen to the music playing from the moment on a BV7 (or any other Master Link product) connected via ML/NL converter to the SoundHeart, even if the BV7 (or Master Link product) has no DLNA capabilities ?

This has nothing to do with 'no DLNA capabilities of the BV7.

Thiss is only a question of routing a source (e.g. 'Radio') through the NL/ML Converter to the ML product.

And it is a question of having a software on the converter, that is needed for this.

As I wrote above - this is not the case at time being. We will have to wait some months untill this functionality will be released.

Note: the 'Join' command has been in the 'List' of  the newer Beo4's for a while already.

I am not the one to stand up for B&O, but the hardware of both devices are capable and prepared for it.

So I don't see why it should not be so.

The Essence and the A9 is another issue - they will have to be upgraded both (actually the A9 already has been - it is now called A9 2. Generation).

I never heard of different versions of the Converter. At some point there were some ports added - but they were there, just hidden and inactive.

It's great on the B&O website that they are incorporating "how to use" the product.  I mentioned this months ago as something missing but would be great to see.

Well done B&O

I’m lucky to have a very good connection with my dealer, so together with his technician we played an afternoon with the new Moment. I’m not going to give here a long boring opinion, but only my first thoughts and the small experience the way the Moment felt to me.

Its a very nice and well made piece of equipment. Its very good looking and the finish is made to the same quality standards we are used to get from B&O. Is it worth the money? Yes, the case gives me a proper feeling. It attracts me!

The only visual negative comment I have is about how they implement a screen to it. It strongly feels the engineering team have been taking too much time and effort into development of the device and had no more time to find a better solution to integrate a good looking screen. In a way the management sets a deadline: the Moment has to be now in production, let’s stop further development and look if you could integrate a tablet as screen… B&O could really do better.

I’m not going into details how we did our first setup of the Moment, very easy for someone who is used to work with network environments but for most buyers I’m sure it will be done by the dealer. We hardwired the Moment to the network in a manner as all of the products have been in the store.

If you first power up the device, there are some softly turning rainbow colors in the screen of the Moment. Thats nice, B&O has not forgotten to give it that extra cool effect like we get everyday from opening the electronic curtains of their tv’s (at least I have). In the shop it takes 2 minutes before its ready to play, the Moment needs time to handshake and connect with the network in the shop. The NL device (the Avant) needs also time to power up and make this connection. The shop’s network is rather large with a lot of clients, so our guess is that in a home private network environment it will be faster, probably time will be reduced to 30 seconds.

We used two units to serve music to the Moment, at first we did a setup with a Beomaster 5 and secondly we connected a NAS with twonky server. Remember before you are able to play some music with a new system, you have to give the new device some time to load the music (time depends on how large your digital collection is). Once this is done, you can start playing.

There came the first disappointment. It was slow, really slow in starting to play a song from an album… I’m used to my own setup with a Mac mini i7 with iTunes who is fast and this took around 10-15 seconds of waiting before that song finally starts playing. We did not expect this, and a further investigation reveals that the cause came from the Beomaster 5, connected to the network and running on the old Windows platform. Really not the best for the Moment! Everything changed once we step aside the Beomaster 5 and used the NAS with twonky server, it was a night and day difference in loading and choosing albums and songs. After this I could smile again. All owners of a Beomaster 5 better invest at the same time in a decent network storage system when buying the Moment.

Does the Moment has a shortcoming? Yes, it has a big one… it’s a not finished product to me, it lacks the NL/ML compatibility! I find it unbelievable that B&O released a music system on the market who is not ready to all of his clients. Especially when a brand is selling and pointing in his advertising at network products such as Essence, several network tv’s and other additional sound systems. The promise that network compability will be ready by summer is a small excuse to me but a serious thinking fault of the B&O management.

My conclusion is that the launch of the Moment is exactly pointed to new customers who are going for a first buy AV product from B&O, and not to me as a long term client. I don’t understand the Danish thinking, it seems to be a detour. First the Essence and then the Moment, was it not better to have a fully functioning Moment and later the Essence? This way, you had two audiences who would have been happy , new and old customers.

Established clients of B&O do not expect miracles from the Moment as it functions now, there is rather limited multiroom functionality. This means you can not use more than one NL source. If going for NL then you can listen at it from your NL source (a TV, BV11, V1 or Avant) whether or not connected with additional speakers. Or ML (in conjunction with the ML/NL converter) around the whole house, but in this environment no NL TV will work, herein does work an older ML TV.

Connected to the Avant with BL 18 and BL 19 how does it sounds? It sounds good, really good. I’m in no way listening to a digital hiss, it gives you the high-quality sound we are used to get from our beloved brand. Even Deezer or TuneIn with their limited stream quality sounds very good to me. Is a music set-up with a dedicated Mac mini, separate DAC and software as Amarra, Audirvana+ or Jriver better in sound? Probably yes, I have to find out some day. But nothing beats to me the premium sound I always enjoyed so much from B&O, and the Moment continues this tradition by pride.

Will I buy the Moment? A definitely big Yes. Although there are shortcomings on the Moment the way its on sell now, it beats every combo in ease of use and that to me is the most important point. I'm not the only one in our house who enjoys music, the rest of the family does the same. But I'm the only one who is technically savvy sufficient to control difficult systems. The Moment delivers a music system operable for everyone, my whole family. It even feels its another step easier with the Beomusic app. Hopefully summer comes fast!
