The idea is great. Combining all B&O apps into one (and I mean ALL of them (BeoRemote, BeoMusic, Beolink)) that you can use whilst on the street in the subway on the airplane or your house.

Hmmm - why would you want to control something (some devices) in your house,

whilst you are on an airplane or in the street....???

I think this person means to use the app to browse and listen to locally stored music on the iPhone with headphones?

I want this too... It's just something different to using Apple's own music app which is great too...

But the app only lets you connect and play from B&O connected devices... not headphones...

Hmm, i don't get this at all.....when out and about, playing music on headphones is straightforward...and the native streaming apps are all pretty good....does anyone thin B&O can do a better job of that? moreover they'll be restricted anyway by the 3rd party, so why spend time making a compromised experience...?

and much as many would like (myself included) to be able to chose a streaming service to plug into B&O apps, that's not under B&O's control, a well rehearsed debate i feel.......

True... if it's Deezer, you tap on Deezer.

If it's Spotify or Tidal, then you tap straight on that app.

I wouldn't tap on B&O until I'm home...

Well, that would be a very limited use of the X-app ;-(

Wouldn't it be better just to have a 'B&O-styled' app for that?

That should be easy to make - just a skin on a local music player app.

---

When you look into the future, it should be possible to make a set of headphones with the functions of an Essence built-in (tech is getting smaller and smaller...).

And you could use these headphoses just like you'd use your stationary NL-gear - alone or as part of a multiroom setup.

Now, that would be something new - com'on B&O ;-)

Yes! You have put it into good words!

And that's how headphones would connect 👌🏻🔥💯

That's not what I'm referring to in my earlier post. When you're at home and you'd like to play for example hi res 24bit music from a streaming service such as Qobuz wirelessly on your B&O sound system requires integration in the B&O app. AirPlay would be pointless as it can only support up to 16bit music which may be fine for services like Tidal HiFi but anything of higher quality such as Tidal MQA or Qobuz Sublime requires built-in support.

I found out recently that Devialet have managed to do this with their Spark app which proves it can be done. Also have a look at how many streaming services Sonos have integrated into their app. It is possible through third party APIs which already exist and are available to App developers. I just hope over time, B&O take advantage of third-party APIs provided by streaming services to give their customers the option to take full advantage of their B&O sound systems to to play hi-res music from streaming services such as Tidal MQA and Qobuz Sublime as well as others services such as Spotify, Apple Music, etc.

So will this app now support Essence Mark I?  Not clear; please let us know and, if so, when.  Thanks.

I downloaded and found it to be totally unusable with my new Essence II running from iPhone 7.

  1. Using TuneIn it repeatedly turns itself up to Maximum volume causing most of the neighbourhood to think we had been nuked as the Lab5's exploded with Wagner
  2. The other main thing I use the Essence for is running the Line In from our TV.  For some reason the new App seems to stop the Essence detecting the line in and constantly goes to Bluetooth which means when I get an SMS my Lab5's sound like like the bells of St Mary live in our back living room

I tried to fix all this up through the settings, and system menu's but they are soooooooo slow, I gave up in the end.  So all in all the new App for me is unusable, and I have no desire to try it with Spotify or similar just out of interest in case it blows my speakers.

Back to the old App for me

agree with that for the most part......i down have that much experience of the Spotify UI, and while it is great to have the range of music sources that they do have, i'm not sure if its implemented in the impressive way (UI and functionality wise) as many B&O customers would like......anyway, that may all come to the B&O experience, though it is difficult to do in a long lasting way given the streaming services can change and make demands over time......as for 3rd party API's, if thats a stable route to what we want, then you may well be right, not an expert in this regard......

my comment was more at some suggesting using the B&O X app when out and away from home equipment - which i don't think is a use case B&O are trying to provide for app-wise.....

Hi James

I'm very sorry to hear about your poor experience. Of course we would like to find out what went wrong and fix it. Could i persuade you to write a feedback from the app or to appsupport@bang-olufsen.dk.

I'm sorry for the trouble.

Hi Irvine

We have implemented support, but DLNA and TuneIn favorites are not yet working. It has proven much harder than anticipated since it is implemented in a completely different way on mk1 than on the newer products. We're working on it but it will not be ready for the next release. We're still contemplating to release it without these two core feature in the first version, but haven't reached a decision yet.

Sorry for the wait.

I would suggest to the B&O developers to NOT withdraw the availability of the BeoMusic app prematurely. Leave the BeoMusic App alone on the App Stores for a while longer until the X App gets on its feet and is relatively stable, usable, bug free with the basics. Even a handful of customers with poor experiences and no way to redownload the BeoMusic App isn't great news for B&O.

To reiterate, I'd suggest not pulling the current BeoMusic App at least a few more months longer. I know I'm going to download and keep a copy of the iPhone App on my Mac from here on in just to have it in case I have to revert back due to something inopportune happening with the X-App.

I am aware that one doesn't have to delete the app, but I've known accidents to happen where for one reason or another the app is deleted and there's no way back.

I would second that!

No need to hurry about removing it, before the X-app is definitely 'finished' imo.

By the way - once you have downloded/'bought' an app, it is still there in your purchages.

I just downloded the (very) old BeoPlayer app, which was made for the old iPhones/iPods, when used with the BS8. This is not in the store for general downloading anymore.

I agree with Sturock, kill the volume control GUi. That would give more space for more useful things. I drew a 10min-sketch (sorry, very poor quality) just for the sake of a discossion

I totaly agree with that. Currently the new X-App is just another Deezer-optimized-App - and in my opinion, for my daily tasks - not even a good one -yet. I am a big fan of the luxury sleek looking old BeoMusicApp. The only thing I've really missed is the removed landscape mode. Now with the new App, if I want to listen to my chosen Deezer content only, it is nearly impossible to find my own favorite Deezer-playlist, nor -Artists. There is no alphabetical order (artist-album) anymore. The only thing you can do, is swipe, swipe and swipe through stuff/tiles you don't want to listen to right now. Even the Deezer-App itself is able to present at first sight or tap my own lists, albums and artists. Why do I need to scroll down trough recommendations first? Dear Mr. Anderson, you wrote that some important things for some users, like DLNA-support and the all-over-search will be not supported in the current and maybe the next upcoming version and still B&O decides to move forward the official "killing" of an App which is currently working very well.

Don't get me wrong, it was overdue, that B&O is finally catching up in the software-development-department and I am very happy about that. I see how B&O is improving fast, especially with the BeoSound Moment. Why not developing the new app in the same way, like you did it with the 2.x-version for the Moment - with the support from the crowd and beta-groups? I am a proud and a very active beta-tester, because I wanted a working BS-Moment and that the device survives.  A new App which binds all devices and sources together, great idea - but you are not finished yet and pull the plug for the BeoMusicApp. Is there a other reason, than manpower? The BeoMusicApp is done and finished. Why not keeping? The fees at the Appstore are not unbearable. Maybe the real reason is to collect new user-data or -patterns with the mandatory account - just by forcing everyone to use the new app. Currently, there is a B&O-second-hand-market too. The essence mk1 is nearly useless without the old BeoMusic-App. The new App will be limited. If some owners try to sell it, there is no way for new owners to download the surely needed BeoMusic-App and no way to get "fixed-on" to the real B&O experience. But ok, let's throw away the whole perfectly well working "old" NL-hardware, before buying a new B&O-device, because the old App is not available anymore - sarcasm off. Or maybe let's do the same procedure with every new upcoming device - Create a new App, remove the old App while crippling the device. Todays procedure is not very reassuring. We bought Bang & Olufsen Devices, not BeoPlay, which is "supposed" have a shorter circle of life.

I know some of you will write, stop ranting and being grumpy - but sometimes I feel that B&O just loses the focus on their customers

Cheers Beroli

Testing the beta version of the X app at the moment

Nice to have DLNA support now - I have my QNAP server showing in the X app now

Also you can remove sections of the Music screen now - if you don't want to see Deezer picks, personalisation settings allows you to hide various sections, a good thing...

With DLNA support now, Music page is a mix of Deezer stuff / sections and DLNA....not integrated in the way the Moment is

So your Deezer play lists appear under Favourite Play lists, your local ones within your DLNA section

In that regard, the tiles under DLNA are unhelpful. See the picture below - surely if those tiles showed Artists, Albums, Play lists - that would be more useful???

Thoughts welcome?

I Agree, this is an app used to make your experience with your B&O products better. it is not a standard DLNA browsing app, and it should categorise the music from NAS much better, and in an intuitive way. I know this is the Beta version, but it is not the correct way to just make the app an "DLNA" browser.

So the old BeoMusic app separated out Deezer from NAS stored music.  -  i wonder if the intention is the same with the new app.....

The Music screen looks unbalanced now - with big expanded sections for Deezer and one small one for the NAS.......is suspect it will remain this way, after all the X-app  may not be intended to fully replace a Moment......

That said, if the Deezer / NAS content is displayed separately as in the image - i think (a) the single search field should work across both Deezer and local content and (b) the playing screen should show you whether the song playing is Deezer or Local......that part will replicate the Moment a bit but i wouldn't have though too difficult........

This is exactly what I mean. Browsing and listening to the music stored on my server and why not use me iPhone as a "Room" in a multiroom setup. Furthermore Multiroom is great but what about Multiplaces? Offering the B&O experiences wherever you are. Being able to make use of the mood-wheel while commuting, driving or why not at your office. Most of the time spent nowadays is on the street being able to use you phone as if you are in your house is the way to go for me.

Moreover having a smartphone or smartwatch working in such a way can lead to other functions.....think about music following you around the house with out having to press switches. Just by physicaly entering a room your smartwatch (you always carry it with you (that is of course if you have one) and it is always connected to your smart phone) or your smart phone send whatever they play to an essence as soon as they get connected. You would leave your living room and by the moment you enter your dressing room the living room will mute and the dressing room will be where the music is playing. The technology is there it does not cost gazillions so why not????

His #1 problem is the same bad behaviour I have twice posted about.

I think it's an iOS integration problem caused by a 2nd App overlaying its volume level over the top of the 1st App's volume setting.

are you a beta tester?

under Music, add DLNA, searched for servers......it took a few attempts for the search to find my NAS, the first few attempts returned nothing......my QNAP was due a reboot and firmware update....did that, and then the NAS appeared ("magically") in the X app......so in essence, didn't really need to do anything configuration wise.......

i have a QNAP 251 by the way.....

i really think they should add iOS music, i don't get why its in the BeoMuisc app but not the new one.......make absolutely no sense.......Spotify in some form is in the new (beta) version of the X app, though i'm not a user, so haven't tried to see what that offers.....but again, utterly baffling why iOS music is not there....

in the beta version, you can disable Deezer sections by the way.......which is fine, but if all you are left with is DLNA content, it highlights the lack of iOS music........not sure if i'd expect these source issues to be fixed though - the style of the new app looks like some service integration is required, which seems much easier with Deezer than other providers, so while i share your thoughts, i don't expect the other streaming services to be added.....iOS music should be though (locally stored, obviously not Apple Music).......

Yes and no!

If you would only use the app for music devices, it would be a 'yes'.

And you should be able to choose, what to display in the app - probably not an easy task for the programmers,

since this is very much dependent on the way the DLNA server acts,

However, the app is intended to be a universal app for ALL B&O devices on your NL network.

And there you'd need the 'video' and 'picture' categories.

So that is a 'no'.

In the end all depends on how much we will be able to tweak/configure the app for our personal needs and for our actual gear.

Being able to remove for example the Deezer part (if you don't intend to use it) is a start!

Isn't its main mission to control audio streaming of our B&O devices?

It seems, that the X-men have overheard/overruled our concerns.
