Olive One is nearing its revised crowd funding target of $500k (42 hours to go, $487k received!)

If you opt to buy a $399 Olive One you will get a free 1TB cloud upgrade if they pass $500k. Looking at the rate that the funding has gone up in the past 48 hours they should reach that target (but make your own judgement!)

Note that with this crowd funding approach you make a contribution with no absolute guarantee that you will get the promised product.... but it might be  a reasonable risk having regard for how much you might get one for compared to previous/ existing Olive streaming devices (which, like B&O, are very expensive and not without their critics!)

Also note that if you accept the special offer of $25 off currently coming up when you first visit their website, (and which in the small print you cannot combine with any other offer)  it would seem that this offer will prevent you getting the 1TB upgrade without having to pay another $50 (because you didn't pay the $399....)

Free 1TB upgrade Quote: *Customers that have backed Olive ONE at the regular price of $399 only. All other backers can upgrade to 1TB for only $50.

Disclosure: I am about to order one!

Old thread, but after a year of no website updates Olive have suddenly announced the transfer of Olive One manufacturing from Taiwan to Germany.

The price has leapt from that original $399 to €1499!

I expect it to be at least that much better now that the components will be soldered by Western craftsmen...

What will be really interesting is whether the new 'expensive' price is seen as somehow making the product more desireable. The product now has the advantage of being made in Germany, maybe giving the product more appeal if the comments elsewhere about B&O and Denmark vs China are to be believed.

Chances are it'll be soldered by the exact same kind of wave soldering machines no matter where it's made. Very little stuff is designed to be hand soldered, it raises the price significantly and reduces the reliability and makes for more defects. Same for insertion of the components, machine done unless there's really some overwhelming need to have something placed where a machine can't insert the component. In my career that sometimes happened, especially for signal lines if they needed to be away or oriented in a certain way from other components to avoid crosstalk or noise, but the hair pulling that went on to try and find a way to machine insert them even then was amazing, and this was for military gear where price was definitely not as much of a driving factor.

Maybe the expect that the audiophiles will buy into the product, now that it has become more expensive ;-)
