As many other users I've been following the Moment Beta 2.x thread closely to follow the development and improvement of the Beosound Moment from seing this early user video to the final demo video published today (software version 2.0.66.3399-2.0.446.186065534) - I can only say that I'm extremely happy with the update which now includes the long lasting search function which includes my own music archive as well.

To be mentioned also is that I did not have any issues at all during or after the upgrade. The system rebooted after the initial download and software upgrade which after it then started to harvest both Deezer media including my local QNAP NAS library via Twonky server. From that it seems that it takes around 1000 tracks per hour; but something I need to check a bit more when adding more media to my "new" music archive (doing some major house keeping to ensure proper bitrate, mp3 tagging (using mp3tag) and what else Bliss tagging software can find of issues which needs to be fixed).

While I'm still playing around with v2.0 of the software, it would be really interesting to hear others impressions as well and as well if there are still nice features which we've missed out which haven't been covered in the beta thread. But, so far it Rocks! Big Smile

Weebyx:

Hiort:

From what I heard, B&O developed the original Moment software using an offshore team. They created some 170.000 lines of code.

B&O then hired a team of 20 inhouse developers, where many came from Google. The new software is down to some 17.000 lines of code, so it should be much more effective now and easier to manage and build upon. (The numbers are from memory, but there is a significant reduction done).

That is great news :)

One funny thing, and also a thing I have reported back, is that the Moment actually responds to a 2-way remote like the BL5000..

It causes the green button on the back to flash very fast, and unfortunately, the volume, if turned up by the BL5000, will keep rising to max volume. Quite scary on a set of Penta 3's :) This continuous rise can be stopped by turning the volumen down, but then it sometimes just turns all the way down :)

This is "the problem" when the developers of a product does not know the history of a company. The newer(older) 1-way products, just ignore the 2-way protocol, but how should a developer know this, if he does not know about a 20 year old 2-way remote :)

I have suggested that they in coming sw, just ignores the 2-way ir protocol in the moment, but as Lyle wrote back "you are probably the first to ever use a 2-way remote with the moment", so this is probably not a serious problem, and something that is but in the backlog :)

I'm not very happy with the new software.

The two outer circles at the Moodwheel play all possible music, but nothing belonging to the existing music. I do not need playlists if that would work well.

And there is a mistake that has already existed. The display is black when the music changes to the next track. Very bad.

For me not a good update. Not a good job, B & O.

that raises the question: "what played on your Moment outer circles before this update. The latest update didn't change the Moodwheel functionality?" Do you know how the Moodwheel works?

I have been following the specific thread with a lot of anxiety as to when the new software will be available since I am following the beta thread as well. I upgraded to v2 last night and unfortunatly I did not have enough time to play around with the new software but the first impression is WOW!!! They really did a very good job. Interface's behaviour is stable, the search section has become a music search section instead of a deezer search section. You get some feedback as to what the moment is doing at the background so you don't have to wonder when you music is going to be available, or if the wifi signal is strong enough etc. This is a great step forward. I will play around a bit more with it and I will come back with more details.

PS I totally agree with some of the people in this forum that they should add the multiroom screen to the moment interface since the idea is to have a beosound 5 with a detachable screen you should be able to move around your house and use it as a telecommander. After all I do not think that it is difficult....they have done it for our iPhones and android smartphone....Smile

Pretty much the same here, and adding the multi room screen would have been excellent, so something to come sooner rather than later. Althought to be honest what they've done is amazing as it was pretty much garbage in the previous software version.

Anyway moving on, not had too much play time, as kept busy by HWMBO, so Sunday morning it'll have a good workout, but the first impressions are from previously wanting to steer clear of it and only using the BeoMusic app to control it, its now much MUCH better to use, amazingly fast and a pleasure to finally own after the software update. Great job by all involved, let's get on that itterative path and go for Agile monthly updates now please :-)

Very nice to see your satisfied with all those tiny but important changes. Smile

That's good news

Is it just you that uses the moment or the other half too?

Sometimes for some the other half is always hard to convince of the b&o equipment- I'd be interested what he thought of the use too (and any others for that matter)

Yeah he took the wise move to stop using physical use of the moment, the moment entered the house. Went into the "As long as I can use a BeoRemote One on it, I don't care". I did try the original software but even for me trying to sell its use was a no win situation. Have tried the BeoMusic app with it as that was the best of a bad job.

The good news is I can forget to use the app now as that annoyed me in ways that would make only work colleagues hide in corners lol.

So having a pay this morning sheds more light:

Search-

  • search of sources (Deezer & Twonky) is so fast I no longer need to go make a cuppa
  • Results displayed by playlist, artists, albums, tracks, radio is excellent
  • Results actually come back with relevant based results and not seemingly random made up stuff as previously
  • Going back to search will highlight the last section of the search you were interested in e.g., albums
  • Clicking on a result begins play, again no more making a cup of tea while you wait

General-

  • Volume wheel is really sensitive compared to previous as you can easily blow yours ears off, as the last version the volume took huge finger movement to make happen lol
  • Nice touch while adjusting volume on the mood wheel, the volume backlighting shows the same hue as the track playing
  • Would be nice to keep swiping top-down to get the different views and them just revolving, rather than having to swipe the other way when you get to the end
  • Something for podcasts would be nice
  • Love the way is marks your items as local, was a total mystery before
  • Discover section, I'm at a total loss still how this really functions and would be good to change the categories/sections etc

More later, but ts fast, non crashing and actually a joy to use.

Funny, I actually thought it was an improvement to *not* having them revolve. When they did, I never could remember which view was above or below which, so even though there were only three views I always had the feeling that it was random which view I would get when I swiped up or down. Of course it wasn't, but it felt that way and as a result I swiped in a random direction as well to get the view I wanted, and then I only swiped one more time if I didn't get what I wanted the first time. Never thought of it as a problem, until the new version came without revolving views and I suddenly noticed that I remembered where the different views were relative to each other after having used them only once or twice.

It's probably easier for the mind to make a mental map of the topography of the views when they don't revolve, making the setup more 2D in a way.

Other than that, I agree. This new software is a huge step forward.

v 2.0 of the software is an improvement.  The only downside i've seen is the endless harvesting of my DLNA server and the subsequent processing.  The harvesting is relatively fast (though occurs once or twice a day). the processing can be slow and some of my playlists disappear until processing is complete. Music playback can be a bit spotty when the moment is 'processing'.

I haven't added anything new to my collection of 374 artists and 6570 tracks.  the previous version didn't seem to do this.

Hopefully it will be fixed in the next version.

Am I missing something here or is the Moment treating Deezer favourites different with this new software? If it's a bug I'm hoping it will get fixed soon. If it's a feature I don't think it qualifies as an improvement.

In Deezer you can favourite ("heart") either an artist, an album or a track.

With the previous Moment software, the albums I had favourited made up the album collection on the Moment, sorted by artist but unaffected by whether I had favourited the artist in itself or not. The Moment actually didn't use the favourited artists for anything, as far as I could tell.

Now, albums I have favourited are included in the collection as before, no change there. However, artists I have favourited are also included in the Collection, including *all* their available albums/EPs/singles on Deezer. This makes the favouriting of albums unneccesary, for artists you have favourited. They are included anyway.

I'm not sure if I think this is an improvement. Regardless of how much I like an artist, I usually don't want everything they have available on Deezer to show in my collection. Often this includes different releases of the same album, or endless versions of very similar "best of" albums that I certainly don't want to litter my neat album collection.

An example: I absolutely love Pixies. But I'm quite happy with having the "original" albums, Come On Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, Bossanova, Trompe Le Monde and maaaybe Complete B Sides in my collection. Having favourited Pixies as an artist on Deezer I now suddenly have 33 albums/EPs/singles under Pixies on my Moment. Makes it a chore to find the actual albums.

I do suppose I can fix this by un-favouriting all my favourite artists, but it does seem a bit counterintuitive... Unsure

Does anybody know, or have similar experiences? Oh, and Lyle, if you're reading this: I haven't written to Beocare yet. Smile

This is a feature, not a bug... but yes, we know that not everyone will agree and it has been thoroughly debated internally.

The feature is that if you favorite an artist, we add the entire discography to your collection. If you simply favorite individual albums, and don't favorite the artist, then we just add those to the collection.

There are a number of advantages to this.

  • Favorite an artist, and automatically get their latest albums in your collection.
  • Quick and easy way to build a collection from scratch (especially for those just getting started without a lot of favorite albums etc.
  • MoodWheel inner ring and middle ring work better (try it)
  • Works great with the 'double tap to play contents of a tile in random' feature

We have received a lot of good feedback so far on this feature, and would be sorry to see it go.

The disadvantages include multiple albums, singles & EPs, and albums with nothing but remixes etc. getting added that some would prefer not to have in their collection. The EPs and Singles etc. we solve to some degree with the album sort order, so they appear last inside the collection of albums for an artist, but this is not solved totally.

You can solve this by unfavoriting the artist, and just hearting the albums you want. Not super elegant, but possible. We have a more elegant solution up our sleeves of making it easier to remove albums from your collection but that will have to wait for now.

Thanks for the feedback and sorry for the inconvenience.

I love tis feature  for reasons mentioned by Lyle.

@Lyle: could you elaborate how it would improve the working of the middle ring?

Another change I really like is that when you add a Deezer playlist it does not add these songs in "Collection" anymore. this way you keep your own collection "clean"

Thank you for the swift reply! Really impressive. For you, this is work, after all. You do know it's late sunday evening, right? Stick out tongue I do hope B&O pays you overtime for this! Smile

Anyway: Sounds like you have really thought this one through! I'll try to live with all the extra albums etc. for I while then, and try out the benefits with the MoodWheel and double taps. And if I find out it's unbeareable, I'll just unfavourite everything and wait for the more elegant solution. No stress!

Agree. This is perfect. I requested this from BeoCare a year or two ago. Ended up deleting all the playlists I had found on Deezer in the end. Guess I can add them again now!
